Warrior Spirit Running to the Sound of Gunfire ReviewI was surprised to find that Jim had written a book about his Army experiences. I was one of the young privates lucky enough to serve under his mentorship in the infantry recon unit where Jim was the First Sergeant even though his actual rank was only a Staff Sergeant.
Jim was the soldier's soldier. He was a legend even at that time. This was before the first Iraq War so his Ranger combat patch stood out and caught everyone's attention identifying him as one of only a handful of true combat veterans in the Army during the long break between the Vietnam War and the more recent modern wars of the last decade. Jim parachuted into Grenada and descended through enemy fire. During the fighting he was shot in the stomach. He survived it all and years later he would routinely puke when our unit would go on runs because of the remaining stomach problems it had caused him. Jim was hardcore. It was a different time and different place, it would be hard to understand if you weren't there. Jim would lead "puke runs" where the unit would run together in the back hills for hours at a time until people were pushed hard enough to start puking. Jim trained us for war. He knew more about how to set up ambushes, various unorthodox ways to employ and rig the Army's weapons, how to walk the mountains and hills at night by the stars or with a compass, how to plan and execute raids, recons, ambushes and build hide sites, and literally just survive in a multitude of environments whether it was winter, jungle or desert. He was the most feared and respected leader I have ever personally known and served with in the Army. Beyond that he was a man of incredible moral character who would and had readily suffered great physical hardship and pain rather than fail his comrades or his country.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to hear an authentic voice of one of the most accomplished soldiers who has served in the Army since the time of the Vietnam War. Jim is the real deal, and there are few soldiers who have worn the uniform since Vietnam who could compare with him, and NOBODY's military record and accomplishments could put Jim's to shame.Warrior Spirit Running to the Sound of Gunfire OverviewStories of a Special Forces Operator from Grenada to the Middle East to the former Yugoslavia.
