Beyond the Crash Building an Economic and Ecological Democracy ReviewIn Beyond the Crash, Hal Logan has produced a remarkably concise and insightful survey of the many serious problems that confront our world in this new century. If that were all the book had to offer, it would make for a rather discouraging read. However, an optimist like Mr. Logan always looks for clues to a better future while analyzing the daunting challenges we face in the present. The crash referred to in the title is, of course, the international financial meltdown of 2008-2009 that threatened to plunge the world into a second Great Depression. Drawing upon a wide range of writings on that event along with a variety of background works on money, the banking system, capitalism, the nation state, militarism, and industrialization, the author shows how all of those institutions - the glorious products of the machine age and modernity - have become interlocked in a globalized monster-system that now poses a lethal threat to the prospects of humanity. At the same time, robotics, nanotechnology, and medical advances hold out the promise of barely imaginable benefits for future generations.
These developments have been explored separately in many other excellent writings, but a distinguishing feature of Beyond the Crash is its concern with the ideas and attitudes that are the hidden driving force behind the observable trends. Logan believes that nothing less than a radically new worldview is required for necessary change to take place. He thinks the elements of a "new paradigm" have already started to appear in fields as diverse as quantum physics, ecology, evolutionary psychology, genetic theory, consciousness studies, and New Age mysticism. Once freed of a materialistic model of a "dead" universe, an understanding of matter and life as manifestations of Spirit or a "Life Force," common to all beings and linking all in a web of mutual interdependence and compassion, can emerge. Wide acceptance of the new paradigm - sometimes called the "green" level of consciousness - will bring about profoundly positive changes in our culture, politics, economics, and international institutions.
Some may have their doubts about how influential such philosophical notions can be, but social research has already discovered evidence of their growing popularity. For example, in Spiral Dynamics, Don Beck and Christopher Cowan estimate that approximately 10 per cent of the world's population are greens, wielding about 15% of the world's power. Not yet a critical mass, but those numbers will increase. It appears that the fate of humanity will be determined by a race of competing paradigms against a clock of unknown life expectancy.
Readers seeking an overview of the great issues of our time or signposts for their own exploration of promising alternatives to the status quo need look no further than the riches contained in this readable book.
