Tangled Webs ReviewTangled Webs is a page-turner. From the opening quote, "When we do include (people with disabilities), they add richly to our lives and add immensely to our world", by Jean Vanier, to the last sentence, "It's what sisters do", the author takes us on a rollercoaster ride through life with people with disabilities. Mind you, it's not all fun and games. Along the way we are introduced to many people, some with deep understanding, others with deep-rooted prejudices and bigotry. We meet teachers, doctors, social workers and many other professionals. We are taught that even some "experts" see the label first, and not the person. Neighbours may or may not be supportive. Reality is a world full of labels rather than human beings.
If you want a touchy-feely book about a person with Down syndrome, this is not for you, nor is it another textbook. The author hits hard at people who "label", and also sees the beauty in the caring person. She takes us on a journey full of joy, tears, fulfillment and frustration; one moment I was laughing, the next, crying. I lived a full and joyous life of over thirty years in the three hours it took me to read this book.
Sure, I'm the author's husband and am enthusiastic about it, but that does not exclude me from recognizing an excellent and moving book about the world I was fortunate to enter and embrace after I met Barbara and Sharon. B. R.
