Development of Professional Expertise: Toward Measurement of Expert Performance and Design of Optimal Learning Environments ReviewDevelopment of Professional Expertise is perhaps the finest book I've ever read on how to generate great individual and group performances, and I've read more than 400 books on the topic. Indirectly it shows how ineffective traditional talent management really is at many organizations. Using terms like "work-sample testing, engagement simulation, and after-activity reviews," it provides the reader with a toolbox of approaches that can be applied in any type of organization. The variety of authors and case studies provides extraordinary breadth and depth on the topics of objectively measuring performance and ways to improve it. I can't think of a better investment for any business manager who wants to improve performance throughout his or her organization, or part of an organization.
My favorite parts of this book were the actual methods for improving performance, which include engagement simulation, cognitive apprenticeship, processing activities, modeling, and problem-based methods. My on-going professional quest is to find ways to improve group performance because I believe groups are the fundamental unit of any organization. No individual creates and delivers value to customers in a vacuum. That value is created and delivered by groups of people. Organizations don't create new products or services. It is groups within those organizations that create the new products and services. Consequently any methods that can be applied to improve group performance are very valuable in my opinion.
Even though on page three, it says, "The primary focus of this book is on individual performance," I still believe these methods for improving performance can be applied to groups as well even though it may require some tweaking of the methods.
An additional strength of the book is the breadth of examples and authors. This theme of developing professional expertise was looked at from the eyes of more than 30 authors, all of whom seem to know the content of their chapters very well. This enriched the overall perspective that the reader gained from the book. It would be impossible for any one person to have that much breadth of knowledge and experience.

Conceptions of Parenthood (Ashgate Studies in Applied Ethics) ReviewEveryone knows what a parent is, right? Well, not exactly. For example, while many people believe biology is the determining factor in establishing parental rights and obligations, it absolutely fails-so says Austin. Why? Well when you start asking what exactly it is in biology that determines parenthood things get murky. Is it carrying a child? If so, then are surrogate mothers parents of the children they give out to adoption? What about the sources of egg and sperm? Do donors have the rights to the children they inevitably produce? Or could it be genetic make up? But then, does a father's identical twin brother get a say in how to raise the child? Some think the causal sex act ought to be binding to a parental role, yet no one would want a rapist to be a father of their children.
In the book, Austin argues for a pluralistic understanding parenthood organized around the motif of stewardship. Broadly speaking, this means parents are specially invested in the care-taking and guidance of a young person into adulthood. Imagining the child as a potential adult, a parent is to be primarily interested in the child's well-being and is obligated to nurture and raise the child into a responsible adult capable of his or her own independence. Both parental consent and causal factors play a part in determining whether one is a parent or not. If a couple consents to raise a child, they can achieve parental status by way of adoption. Biological parents who forsake their children forfeit their parental rights, though they cannot annul their obligation to see to it that their children are placed in an environment of caring parental stewardship.
Austin ably submits many puzzles and paradoxes that function as effective examples and counterexamples of parenthood, and effectively demonstrates that it is something that is a moral rather than biological role. It's obligations are related to biological causation, but not necessarily in that consent and moral duty are the primary factors in being a good steward of a child's upbringing.
Though this book was a very dense and at times difficult read, but it was deeply rewarding... though probably not as difficult and rewarding as actually being a parent!Conceptions of Parenthood (Ashgate Studies in Applied Ethics) OverviewOur parents often have a significant impact on the content of our beliefs, the values we hold, and the goals we pursue and becoming a parent can also have a similar impact on our lives. In "Conceptions of Parenthood", Michael Austin provides a rigorous and accessible philosophical analysis of the numerous and distinct conceptions of parenthood. Issues considered are the nature and justification of parental rights, the sources of parental obligations, the value of autonomy, and the moral obligations and tensions present within interpersonal relationships. Austin rejects the 'proprietarian', 'best interests of the child', and 'biological' conceptions of parenthood as failing to generate parental rights and obligations but considers more sympathetically the 'custodial relationship', 'consent', and 'causal' conceptions of parenthood and ultimately defends a 'stewardship' conception. Finally Austin explores the 'stewardship' view for practical and moral questions related to family life and social policy regarding the family, such as the education of children, the religious upbringing of children and state licensing of parents.

A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-first Century ReviewI received this book just this weekend - and have already devoured the new chapters - all very good additions. I noted that many of the little errors have been corrected, and the book is just beautiful - hardback, with a lovely dust jacket - and a nice black bookmark! Classic! All that said, my review still stands from the first edition:
I can give the education of our patriots to our children!
My theories, hopes, expectations, and dreams for homeschooling our children are all laid out in this book. It has classic book lists in the back divided by age range (Dr. Seuss is on the list!), step-by-step instructions for how to become an effective mentor to your child or classroom, and succinctly and interestingly describes the current failures of "traditional" classroom methodology. (I'm a former public school teacher, and I agree from experience!)
The only place I disagree with the author is in learning a foreign language - he states we should read a classic in the target language and discuss it. Reading don Quijote in Spanish to anyone who doesn't already know Spanish, will sound like gibberish...So to get a head start on your young one knowing a second language try Workbook and CD like Flip Flop Spanish instead.
Otherwise, this book is quick and extremely informational to read, - a new way of thinking for me, for sure! - and in another year, I look forward to testing its theories in our daily practical lives!

Wake-Up Calls: 101 Devotionals for Sleepy Christians ReviewI've had this book for awhile and I just figured out how to read it most effectively. This is not a sit down and read cover to cover type of book, although you can do that if you wish. It's more to fill in those short gaps where you've got 5 minutes or so. Mornings are what is implied, but I've found reading a section at night works very well. Each section is only a couple pages but has an impact much greater. A Bible verse is included, and usually a short story to illustrate the point. Where you go from there is up to you, but you go with a new perspective. As with all his books, the author writes as though he's speaking directly to you, which makes the content more personable and accessible.Wake-Up Calls: 101 Devotionals for Sleepy Christians OverviewI don't know about you, but I need all the help I can get when it comes to spiritually jump-starting my day. Some days I get up and it is all I can do to concentrate on a few verses of Scripture. Other days I feel tempted to blow off my twenty minutes of reading because I'm anxious that I have too much to do. On such days I have found it helpful to have a source to direct my thoughts toward God. I need a tool to help me rouse my weary spirit and prepare to take on yet another day of kingdom building. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fatherhood ReviewI had purchased this book for my husband to assist him in his new role as step-father to my eleven-year-old. Of course, I read the book first to ensure that the book provided solid advice. The book provides basic and a few creative tips for the expectant or new father and may help give them peace-of-mind. I was disappointed that the author did not cover the topic of step-fatherhood and that the book concentrated on parenting the infant and toddler years. At the tail end of the book, the author barely touches upon the school-age, pre-teen and teenage years. When added together, less than 1/4 of the book covers parenting these age groups. The advice provided for fathers of older children was little more than basic common sense. I decided not to give this book to my husband and instead will give it to his brother who's wife will be delivering their first child in November. Respectful Parents, Respectful Kids: 7 Keys to Turn Family Conflict into Cooperation ReviewI have followed the principles in this book as well as other NVC books and love the quality of connection I have with my kids (ages 5 and 2). However, now that my older son is in Kindergarten, we're dealing with a huge problem. The teacher has 24 kids in the class and does not have time to negotiate and find a win-win solution with each one. My son is getting in trouble almost every day for not following directions (i.e. clean up when everyone is cleaning up, not on his own schedule)and is starting to feel like a bad kid. Now I feel like we have to re-parent in some ways using a more 'love-and-logic' approach. I never wanted to be the kind of parent who says, "Do it because I said so." But I now realize that kids need to learn to follow the rules so that they themselves can be happier in society. We now do a lot of talking about what a 'team player' does. This is a great book but for me, it's missing the piece about teaching your kids to follow the rules, because that's how school, work and much of society work. It's wonderful for a parent and child to respect each other equally but this needs to be balanced with the idea that kid's individual needs (or anyone's for that matter) often cannot be accommodated. The philosophical conundrum for me is when to be the NVC parent and when to be the parent who says, "If you're a member of this family, this is what we do (i.e. sit down all together for dinner)." I guess the perfect parenting approach is eclectic; borrowing a little from each theory.Respectful Parents, Respectful Kids: 7 Keys to Turn Family Conflict into Cooperation OverviewMore than a tool to correct bad behavior, this handbook urges parents to move beyond typical discipline techniques by creating an environment based on mutual respect, emotional safety, and positive, open communication. Tangled Webs ReviewTangled Webs is a page-turner. From the opening quote, "When we do include (people with disabilities), they add richly to our lives and add immensely to our world", by Jean Vanier, to the last sentence, "It's what sisters do", the author takes us on a rollercoaster ride through life with people with disabilities. Mind you, it's not all fun and games. Along the way we are introduced to many people, some with deep understanding, others with deep-rooted prejudices and bigotry. We meet teachers, doctors, social workers and many other professionals. We are taught that even some "experts" see the label first, and not the person. Neighbours may or may not be supportive. Reality is a world full of labels rather than human beings.
If you want a touchy-feely book about a person with Down syndrome, this is not for you, nor is it another textbook. The author hits hard at people who "label", and also sees the beauty in the caring person. She takes us on a journey full of joy, tears, fulfillment and frustration; one moment I was laughing, the next, crying. I lived a full and joyous life of over thirty years in the three hours it took me to read this book.
Sure, I'm the author's husband and am enthusiastic about it, but that does not exclude me from recognizing an excellent and moving book about the world I was fortunate to enter and embrace after I met Barbara and Sharon. B. R.

The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children ReviewIndigo children, a recognized group among today's young people, have been diagnosed, studied, and supported by psychologists, educators, and lay people. Born after 1978, they are described as bright, intuitive, strong-willed, and sometimes self-destructive individuals. I learned about them from some educators I served in a consulting capacity and read "The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived" by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. I learned a lot from that book and found myself wanting more. That drive led me to this book.
Compared to "The Indigo Children", this book fell short of my expectations. Because of the author's strong spiritual leaning, the topics, content, and treatment went much further into angels and prayers than it did into how to work practically with these special young people. Perhaps I should have expected this when I saw the author's photo on the back cover. It's a rather unusual shot of a woman in a forest with a Koala bear and she does not appear to have clothes on. Different kind of author photo than I'm accustomed to.
Virtue is described as a PhD "spiritual doctor of psychology." She's heavily invested in angels (author of "Healing with Angels"), which is quite obvious in the book. There is significant text devoted to angels, prayers, and the evils of pharmaceuticals like Ritalin. Some readers may find the pre-written prayers helpful for them. My Indigo step-daughter was less than enthusiastic about prescriptions for communicating with spirits, though the book suggests that some Indigos are really into that sort of experience.
The book includes a number of valuable tips about diet, concentration, and overcoming insomnia. I would have personally preferred more emphasis on these practical techniques than the heavy spiritual component and astrological comments. If you are into the spiritual, you'll enjoy this book, becoming immersed in all of its aspects. If you are not so spiritual, you'll still find some worthwhile concrete ideas and techniques interwoven in the text.The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children OverviewIndigo children are bright, intuitive, strong-willed, sometimes self-destructive individuals. They are often labelled - and misdiagnosed - as having ADD or ADHD because they won't comply with established rules and patterns; and they may exhibit behavioural problems at home and in school. In this text, Doreen Virtue explores the psyche of these special children, aiming to positively affect the ways in which parents interact with their children.

I never ever thought I'd be here. I had spent the better majority of my life working hard to further my career and continue to find that part of my life both rewarding and very fulfilling. I knew likely I would marry - I had great interest in the companionship and lifelong partnership that would bring. But I have never had quite the same desire to be a mom, let alone a stepmom. Life has a funny way of interjecting an alternate path when you least expect it!
Since I met the kids almost 4 years ago, and knowing my relationship with their father was going to be serious, I started searching for support help and doing a lot of reading. But so much out there just never felt like it fit me...negativity, horror stories, or just basic differences - like me not bringing any kids into the equation on my side. I felt like the odd man out, and often felt more alien to stepmotherhood (or the possibility of it) than before I started reading. It is an ongoing "battle" for me. There are some days where I feel very confident in my role as stepmom. There are other days (many more than I would like to admit) where I feel out of sorts and paralyzed almost by the two kids running through my house.
But with this book my feelings were very different. I found myself affirming some of the lines with noticeable head nods and even outloud comments like "I'm not the only one" and "I knew it wasn't just me." It was great. It was like finding a positive, comforting and empathetic friend who spoke with candor and honesty but also with heart and passion for making stepmotherhood more welcoming, more understood, and most importantly, more valued than it often is.
So many stepmoms, especially those who bring no children of their own into the relationship, struggle to find their place with the children. And also come to terms with what this change means for them - both with their husband and with their career/independent life. My big struggle continues to be how to balance my professional life - which is probably the best it's ever been right now - with a personal life that to some extent, I never imagined myself a part of. But slowly, each day gets better, a little easier, more comfortable. Thanks largely in part to a very strong, supportive husband.
Ms. Fletcher's book was refreshing, positive, and very helpful. Put it at the top of your list if you are going to be involved as a stepmother, now or in the future. Few take on the topic like Jacque does.
