The Team Captain's Leadership Manual ReviewI know how important leadership is to the success of any group and yet I didn't have a methodical, clear and consise way of teaching the players/leaders on my team what it takes and what it means to be a leader. I used this book extensively this past year and it is the first time that I felt our team leaders had the information they needed to be effective....and they were! Jeff's book will be used by my program as long as I'm a coach. The Team Captain's Leadership Manual OverviewDesigned for both athletes and coaches of all sports, this one of a kind Team Captain's Manual details a proven 10 week leadership development program to build effective team leaders.Create team captains who: set the tone for your team, hold their teammates accountable to a higher standard, constructively confront their less disciplined teammates, know how to refocus their teammates when they are down or distracted, and take care of a lot of team problems so you don't have to.

Development of Professional Expertise: Toward Measurement of Expert Performance and Design of Optimal Learning Environments ReviewDevelopment of Professional Expertise is perhaps the finest book I've ever read on how to generate great individual and group performances, and I've read more than 400 books on the topic. Indirectly it shows how ineffective traditional talent management really is at many organizations. Using terms like "work-sample testing, engagement simulation, and after-activity reviews," it provides the reader with a toolbox of approaches that can be applied in any type of organization. The variety of authors and case studies provides extraordinary breadth and depth on the topics of objectively measuring performance and ways to improve it. I can't think of a better investment for any business manager who wants to improve performance throughout his or her organization, or part of an organization.
My favorite parts of this book were the actual methods for improving performance, which include engagement simulation, cognitive apprenticeship, processing activities, modeling, and problem-based methods. My on-going professional quest is to find ways to improve group performance because I believe groups are the fundamental unit of any organization. No individual creates and delivers value to customers in a vacuum. That value is created and delivered by groups of people. Organizations don't create new products or services. It is groups within those organizations that create the new products and services. Consequently any methods that can be applied to improve group performance are very valuable in my opinion.
Even though on page three, it says, "The primary focus of this book is on individual performance," I still believe these methods for improving performance can be applied to groups as well even though it may require some tweaking of the methods.
An additional strength of the book is the breadth of examples and authors. This theme of developing professional expertise was looked at from the eyes of more than 30 authors, all of whom seem to know the content of their chapters very well. This enriched the overall perspective that the reader gained from the book. It would be impossible for any one person to have that much breadth of knowledge and experience.
Development of Professional Expertise: Toward Measurement of Expert Performance and Design of Optimal Learning Environments OverviewProfessionals such as medical doctors, airplane pilots, lawyers, and technical specialists find that some of their peers have reached high levels of achievement that are difficult to measure objectively. In order to understand to what extent it is possible to learn from these expert performers for the purpose of helping others improve their performance, we first need to reproduce and measure this performance. This book is designed to provide the first comprehensive overview of research on the acquisition and training of professional performance as measured by objective methods rather than by subjective ratings by supervisors. In this collection of articles, the world's foremost experts discuss methods for assessing the experts' knowledge and review our knowledge on how we can measure professional performance and design training environments that permit beginning and experienced professionals to develop and maintain their high levels of performance, using examples from a wide range of professional domains.

Leafs AbomiNation: The dismayed fan's handbook to why the Leafs stink and how they can rise again ReviewI bought it, read it and regretted it.
The problem is that there are so many statistical errors, that I don't if I should believe the new information presented to me in this book. Below is a sample of the stupid errors.P.xxii-xxiii
Re: Ducks Stanley Cup
"....Scott Niedermayer, the Ducks defenceman who was named the MVP of Anaheim's Cup-winning run in 1997...."
This is obviously a type-o (I hope), as the Ducks wont the cup in 2007P. 64
Re: Gary Valk and Tie Domi's commentss
"Scoring the series winner in overtime in game six of the second round of the 1996 playoffs at Mellon Arena...."
Right situation, but the wrong year. Valk's goal OT winner was in 1999, making perfect sense as that was one four appearances for the Leafs in the Conference finals (since the league moved to a 16 team playoff format). In the `96 playoffs the Leafs went out in the first round to St. Louis. I find it difficult to understand how you could make such a glaring error. Your research is either poor, or you were writing based on memory. In any case, the inaccurate content is shocking.P.112
Re: John Ferguson with Dallas Stars when the won the Stanley Cup
"....was promoted to the director of player personnel for the Dallas Stars during a successful string of seasons that culminated in the Stars; 1998 Stanley Cup....."
Dallas won the 1999 Stanley Cup. Detroit won the cup in 1998 (back to back cups from 1997)P. 201
Re; Wendel Clark Game 6 Hat Trick
"While Clack was a reliable big-game player (and who will forget his hat trick in Game 6 of the '94 conference final?)....."
The Leafs were ousted in 5 games by Vancouver in the `94 conference finals. Clearly you must be talking about his game 6 hat-trick in LA during the `93 conference finals. I really fail to understand how you got this one wrong. In the last 20 years, that `93 playoff run is easily the most recounted in Leaf land. Clark's game 6 hat trick, the non-call on Gretzky's high stick (on Gilmour), everyone remembers watching that. The Fraser non-call is one of, if not the most famous controversial incidents in modern Leafs historyP. 247
Re: Capitals vs Penguins in "conference finals", 2009
"Perhaps the best came in the Eastern Conference final, when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.......played an epic seven game series...."
The Pens and Cap's met in the Eastern Conference semi-finals (second round). The Pens took out the Canes in Eastern Conference finals that year,Leafs AbomiNation: The dismayed fan's handbook to why the Leafs stink and how they can rise again OverviewLove them or hate them, they're the most successful team in professional hockey … just not on the scoresheet. The Toronto Maple Leafs are an exception to every law of the sporting jungle. They miss the playoffs and the sellouts keep coming. They haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1967, but the earning power of that blue-and-white maple leaf, no matter the chronic woes of the blue-and-white's power play, never ceases to increase. In this description of failure and prescription for hope, Toronto Star sports columnist Dave Feschuk and Globe and Mail sports reporter Michael Grange draw the illogical roadmap that pinpoints how the once-proud Leafs got lost in the sporting hinterlands, who's to blame for stranding them there, and how they might extract themselves from this historic mire.

In the Ballpark: The Working Lives of Baseball People ReviewThe fact that the subject is baseball is beside the point. The authors have shown skill, humour, and insight in their ability to identify and highlight all the areas that go into making the game what it is. Some of the people are likable, some you even feel sorry for, but the tact, taste, and even the occasional lack of objectivity serve to make this an enjoyable read. (Coming from a family with many anthropoligists, I can say I've never read anything as fun to read as this.)In the Ballpark: The Working Lives of Baseball People Overview

Boys and their Toys: Masculinity, Class and Technology in America (Hagley Perspectives on Business and Culture) Review"Boys and their Toys," a great title that describes well the subject of this book, is a collection of essays on originally presented at a conference at the Hagley Museum. All of the essays present aspects of technology and masculinity and focus at some level on the role of the workplace. Divided into three major sections--"Manhood in the Workplace," "Learning to Be Men," and "Manhood at Play"--it offers ten chapters on a range of subjects. All of these essays present interesting perspectives on the role of gender in technology and society. Among my personal favorites are Janet Davidson's "`Now We Have Girls in the Office': Clerical Work, Masculinity, and the Refashioning of Gender in a Bureaucratic Age," which explores how the addition of women as office workers in the railroads affected the workplace. She found that male clerks, which had previously enjoyed a close relationship to the masculine work of railroaders on the line not had to find new ways to separate themselves from the women in the office who performed similar work. Hierarchies emerged and efforts to eliminate women from the railroad offices also took place after World War I.
Likewise, Ben Shackleford's essay, "Masculinity, the Auto Racing Fraternity, and the Technological Sublime: The Pit Stop as a Celebration of Social Roles," is a fascinating explication of how the rituals of stock car racing have evolved over time, the role of women in it, and the nature of gender in work and play. His discussion of masculine behavior in auto racing, the choreography of the pit stop, and controlled violence of high speed racing is both illuminating and thought provoking.
Overall, this is a very interesting and instructive volume. Enjoy!Boys and their Toys: Masculinity, Class and Technology in America (Hagley Perspectives on Business and Culture) OverviewNegotiating the divide between "respectable manhood" and "rough manhood" this book explores masculinity at work and at play through provocative essays on labor unions, railroads, vocational training programs, and NASCAR racing.

InSideOut Coaching: How Sports Can Transform Lives ReviewThe journey from a transactional coach to a transformational coach can be long and have many turns, the key is to be on the path. Joe Ehrmann has been a personal mentor to thousands over the past decade through his speeches and coaching. I am thankful to have had several great interactions with him in that span and have always wanted him to write a book. Now not only has he written a book, he has given us all a view into his soul and we can only become more inspired to live up to the goal of being a transformational mentor to any and all people we meet. Be you a boss, an employee, a player, or a coach, being others focused is a way of life. When you take up this cause, I imagine Joe saying, "Welcome to the Team!".
InSideOut Coaching: How Sports Can Transform Lives OverviewJoe Ehrmann, the coach profiled in the national bestseller Season of Life, explains how coaches at every level, from Little League to high school to NCAA Division I and even the professional leagues, can use sports to transform lives. Coaches have a tremendous platform, says Joe Ehrmann, a former Syracuse University All-American and NFL star. Perhaps second only to parents, coaches can impact young people as no one else can. But most coaches fail to do the teaching, mentoring, even life-saving intervention that their platform provides. Too many are transactional coaches; they focus solely on winning and meeting their personal needs. They see sports as a simple exchange: the athlete performs to a coach's demands and in return gets something, usually praise or a position in the starting lineup. Some coaches, however, use their platform. They teach the Xs and Os, but also teach the Ys of life. They help young people grow into responsible adults; they leave a lasting legacy. These are the transformational coaches. These coaches change lives, and they also change society by helping to develop healthy men and women. Sports have become a secular religion, according to Ehrmann. Tens of millions of children play sports, and millions of coaches have the potential to influence the lives of these children—and through them to touch their parents' lives as well. Children can be diminished and discouraged by their sports experiences, or they can be strengthened, uplifted, even in some cases redeemed. Sports can be a life-changing experience if coaches understand why they are coaching and redefine their measurement of success. InSideOut Coaching explains how to become a trans-formational coach. Coaches first have to "go inside" and articulate their reasons for coaching. Only those who have taken the InSideOut journey can become transformational. Joe Ehrmann provides examples of coaches in his life who took this journey and taught him how to find something bigger than himself in sports. He describes his own InSideOut experience, starting with the death of his beloved brother, which helped him understand how sports could transcend the play-ing field. He gives coaches the information and the tools they need to become transformational. Joe Ehrmann has taken his message about the extraordinary power of sports all over the country. It has been warmly endorsed by NFL head coaches, athletic directors at major universities, high school head coaches, even business groups and community organizations. Now any parent-coach or school or community coach can read Ehrmann's message and learn how to make sports a life-changing experience.
