The Complete Idiot's Guide to Going Back to College ReviewHighly recommended! I bought this book for a little help and advice for going back to college after a 27 year absence. What I got was a treasure-trove, well written and easily understood! Shortly into the book, I had a pen and pad for taking notes. This book helped me know what questions to ask and pitfalls to avoid. Disorientation: How to Go to College Without Losing Your Mind ReviewDisorientation is specifically designed to help educate young Catholics on the threshold of leaving home for college and the "Wild West" (so to speak) of modern ideologies with which they will be bombarded upon entering the classrooms. The idea is that if they know what something is (progressivism, multiculturalism, hedonism, and so forth) then they can identify it up front and not fall prey to replacing solid Catholic teachings with skewed ideas. Fourteen essays by top Catholic writers explain and put into context these ideologies which so many people think are "just naturally the way things are." It is edited by John Zmirak so there is a reliable light touch with tongue firmly in cheek that permeates the book. (For the record, I think this is a good thing, especially if you are aiming at the college-bound.)
Let's face it. Chances are that your child has been exposed to these ideologies long before heading off for college. Most of those ideas are communicated through television, movies, and pals who they see every day. Talking about these things intelligently at home is the best way to make sure that everyone understands just why what the Church teaches is true and where those other ideas have skewed truth. If your kids are going to college, sure go ahead and get them a copy. But you don't have to wait that long. This book does a terrific job of helping us understand things from a proper point of view. Get a copy for yourself now. And one for the kids ... no time like the present when it comes to understanding how our culture thinks versus how the Church does.Disorientation: How to Go to College Without Losing Your Mind Overview
Every year, thousands of young Catholics leave their homes for higher education at our nation s colleges and universities. Very few realize, however, that from orientation day onward, they will be indoctrinated with a vision of reality that is very different from the values their families hold dear. Sadly, many of our young people will fall prey to one or more of the dominant ideologies engrained in their college education, ideologies that can lead them away from the Church and, ultimately, their faith in God. Students who are not taught how to think critically or who lack the tools needed to sift through the logic of these positions are easily swayed by the smooth sophistry of the intellectual elite.

For this reason, fourteen of the top Catholic writers in America professors, priests, journalists, philosophers, and theologians have come together to dissect the trendy ideas that can lead young Catholics away from the Church. Disorientation is intellectual ammunition for every college student and parent, as it breaks down the history, analyzes the appeal, and debunks the empty promises of such wildly popular errors as:
Hedonism Relativism ProgressivismModernismScientismFundamentalismFeminismMulticulturalism...and more.
Edited by John Zmirak (author of The Bad Catholic s Guide to Good Living and editor of Choosing the Right College), this book is guaranteed to get college students thinking hard about what their professors are telling them and what they should really believe.

The Rape of Alma Mater ReviewThis book is a "real page turner," an engrossing historical fiction. The reading experience includes some of the excitement that you would expect from a tale of international espionage; the plot follows a conspiracy that begins within the walls of two colleges, and then spreads across and beyond collegiate America. But, though this is fiction, its most fantastical elements are facts that your memory will verify as you recall America during the Vietnam era.
You will first be drawn into the world of two loving friends who, over a span of ten years, maintain their personal and professional values through a time of chaos, pressure, and corruption. This book will speak to you if you've ever wondered how college English classes acquired so many new "isms" or why the antiwar movement seemed to outlast the war itself.
As the story progresses, the students that we have met in the opening chapters have grown up, taking jobs, marrying, and starting families. One of them, a newspaper reporter, tries to document the censorship and political bias that her husband, a professor, encounters in his university. In this attempt she herself encounters censorship of a kind that we do not ascribe to American life. Her carefully researched story, instead of being accepted for publication, costs her her job.
Throughout its long span from the Vietnam War to 9/11, this story, though told colloquially, looks deeply into some of the vulnerabilities of free speech in America.
The Rape of Alma Mater OverviewFrom college presidents to governors, to TV reporters, to faculty, to government agents, to drug dealers, to students of every political stripe, this novel follows a trail of circumstances, opportunities seized, weaknesses exploited, advantages enlarged, groups co-opted, expediencies implemented, to the ultimate unforeseen result where facts, rationality and evidence are sacrificed for a "greater good," where questioning is insensitive and disagreement is backlash, in a takeover that both liberals and conservatives see as ominous, a takeover that is reaching beyond the ivy walls into radio, TV, motion pictures and newspapers.

In the Ballpark: The Working Lives of Baseball People ReviewThe fact that the subject is baseball is beside the point. The authors have shown skill, humour, and insight in their ability to identify and highlight all the areas that go into making the game what it is. Some of the people are likable, some you even feel sorry for, but the tact, taste, and even the occasional lack of objectivity serve to make this an enjoyable read. (Coming from a family with many anthropoligists, I can say I've never read anything as fun to read as this.)In the Ballpark: The Working Lives of Baseball People Overview

Get Into College in 3 Months or Less ReviewI received this great book in a publisher giveaway, and I am so glad I did - it will make my job of assisting my college-bound child so much more focused and organized! The book is rather short, but in only 150 pages the authors are very good at summarizing the most intimidating but important parts of the college application process, from filling out an application from, writing an essay and obtaining reference letters. There is information included for non-traditional education seekers who might go another route and decide to go for online degrees or technical education. What I like most about this book is the author's non-judgemental attitude toward the reader whatever the path he/she chooses to follow, and it is written in a very cheerful and encouraging tone designed to motivate. If you are looking for a primer on financial aid, this is not it, and only the most basic and essential financial aid resources are mentioned here, including the web sites for FAFSA, Fastweb, and a few others, but for that is not really the focus of the book.
Overall I found this book to be very helpful with illustrating the whole process of getting into college, and it includes enough tips and pitfalls to watch out for to justify purchasing it for a procrastinator. I would definitely recommended this book as a high school graduation present for every high school senior!Get Into College in 3 Months or Less OverviewEach year, thousands of parents find themselves in a frantic scramble to help their child get into college at the last minute. The authors also offer last-minute strategies for winning scholarships and grants. The Diverted Dream: Community Colleges and the Promise of Educational Opportunity in America, 1900-1985 ReviewBrint and Karabel trace the history of the community college from their "humble" beginnings at the turn of the century to the big business they are today. The only negative is the long, drawn-out case study from Mass. Because of the concise way they present the community college history, Brint and Karabel are able to also define the historical reasons behind some of the controversies which confront community colleges today. The Diverted Dream: Community Colleges and the Promise of Educational Opportunity in America, 1900-1985 OverviewIn the twentieth century, Americans have increasingly looked to the schools--and, in particular, to the nation's colleges and universities--as guardians of the cherished national ideal of equality of opportunity. With the best jobs increasingly monopolized by those with higher education, the opportunity to attend college has become an integral part of the American dream of upward mobility. The two-year college--which now enrolls more than four million students in over 900 institutions--is a central expression of this dream, and its invention at the turn of the century constituted one of the great innovations in the history of American education. By offering students of limited means the opportunity to start higher education at home and to later transfer to a four-year institution, the two-year school provided a major new pathway to a college diploma--and to the nation's growing professional and managerial classes. But in the past two decades, the community college has undergone a profound change, shifting its emphasis from liberal-arts transfer courses to terminal vocational programs. Drawing on developments nationwide as well as in the specific case of Massachusetts, Steven Brint and Jerome Karabel offer a history of community colleges in America, explaining why this shift has occurred after years of student resistance and examining its implications for upward mobility. As the authors argue in this exhaustively researched and pioneering study, the junior college has always faced the contradictory task of extending a college education to the hitherto excluded, while diverting the majority of them from the nation's four-year colleges and universities. Very early on, two-year college administrators perceived vocational training for "semi-professional" work as their and their students' most secure long-term niche in the educational hierarchy. With two thirds of all community college students enrolled in vocational programs, the authors contend that the dream of education as a route to upward mobility, as well as the ideal of equal educational opportunity for all, are seriously threatened. With the growing public debate about the state of American higher education and with more than half of all first-time degree-credit students now enrolled in community colleges, a full-scale, historically grounded examination of their place in American life is long overdue. This landmark study provides such an examination, and in so doing, casts critical light on what is distinctive not only about American education, but American society itself.

How to Get A's in College Review"How to Get A's in College" introduces hundreds of student-tested tips from hundreds of successful college graduates. They explain how to get top grades, to select the right major, how to manage your time, how to stay motivated, and how to avoid stress. They show you how to find the best teachers and courses, how to form important relationships, and most importantly how to graduate with honors. These tips cover hints from registering for classes, to where to study and what to eat.
The book is made up of short, succinct chapters. I especially appreciated the chapters covering the topics of writing a good paper, doing research, using the college library, and taking advantage of college support services.
Another chapter emphasized the importance of finding balance in athletics and academics. The practical hints on finding your way through modern college technology were very helpful. I also appreciated the tips on "overcoming procrastination."
The book's format lends itself to an easy read and quick assimilation of the diverse opinions and approaches presented. The text is both entertaining and educational. The tips are highlighted with special symbols that differentiate the importance of the suggestion, from "important", "check this out," to "warnings," "amazing," or "consider."
Frances Northcutt, academic advisor in the William E. Macaulay Honors College of the City University of New York at Hunter College is well qualified to edit this book. In 2006 she was chosen as the Outstanding Advisor for the Mid-Atlantic region. Working with a team from "Hundreds of Heads" she has masterfully edited and classified this collection of suggestions from the hundreds submitted for consideration.
I strongly recommend "How to Get A's in College" to parents, high school counselors, students in their senior year of high school and to all college students.

Homeschoolers' College Admissions Handbook: Preparing Your 12- to 18-Year-Old for a Smooth Transition ReviewAll students homeschooled or institutionally educated should read and heed Cafi Cohen's Homeschoolers' College Admissions Handbook. It's fascinating. (Without obvious intent this book makes a strong case for continual lifetime learning.) It is an exceptionally well-annotated reference work. Transcripts are covered. This handbook is as easy and fun to read as the Reader's Digest.
The benefits of this book begin when the pupil can read. Don't wait for the student to ask, "What about College? Frommer's 500 Places Where You Can Make a Difference ReviewI am not a big fan of Frommer's but the topic of this book intrigued me so I decided to give it a shot. I was a bit skeptical at the start, as a few of the first suggested activities felt more like "eco-tourism" (with the emphasis on TOURISM) than grandiose ways to save the world. Not that there is anything wrong with eco-tourism, but at least as I think of it, I see it as more the avoidance of a negative (i.e. "leave no footprint behind!") rather than the creation of a positive as this book claimed in the introductory notes was its mission. However, as I continued to read, I became more and more interested and amazed by the suggested activities, and convinced that yes indeed, these are places and actions where one really CAN make a difference in the world.
I love travel, but had never thought of doing many of things suggested in this book, largely because I had thought of them requiring a larger time commitment than most of us would consider reasonable. That is, most people can't take a year or two off to save the whales or feed the starving in India without serious negative consequences for their own life or career. As idealistic as many of us are, pragmatic constraints often come to bear. But one of the things the reader will quickly note about this book is that many of the suggested activities have a duration of a week or two, which is often a much more manageable amount of time. Many of the activities cost a good deal of money to engage in ($100+/day), which on the one hand goes to a good cause, but on the other can quickly make a large dent in ones savings given that travel to many of these locales is not cheap in itself. But many are not so expensive, and others are "free" in return for a hard day's work, meaning that one could live for several weeks or several months in an exotic locale for nothing more than the price of a plane ticket.
This book is nicely organized as well: not by location, as one might expect from a travel guide, but by theme (animal welfare, teaching children, etc.) which is helpful. If you are like me, you will find yourself naturally gravitating toward certain types of activities more than others, which means that some chapters will be more engaging that others on a personal level. Of course, this book is only a starting point, but that is the point: to raise awareness and spark the imagination. After reading this book, if you are left thinking "wouldn't it be great to do (activity X) in (country Y)?" chances are you can find a way to do this, through a short look around the internet or at the web sites of the specific organizations mentioned here even if it's not specifically mentioned in the book.
"Making a difference" is a noble cause, but it can sometimes sound too overwhelming to be attainable by the common man or woman without oodles of disposable time or money. Yet, this book provides a large number of specific ways in which making a difference really is possible. And of course, although this book focuses mostly on exotic locales, many ways of making a difference can be done right in one's own community. I went into this book slightly skeptical, but emerged thinking of ways I too could make a difference either through one of the programs mentioned in this book or through other means. Much of travel is done to benefit one's own wants and needs. This book does not criticize that perspective, but points out a way in which travel can help others as well.Frommer's 500 Places Where You Can Make a Difference Overview
