Corporate Governance and Ethics: An Aristotelian Perspective (New Horizons in Leadership Studies Series) ReviewSison provides a strong critique of Coase's "the nature of the firm," Jensen and Meckling's "agency theory," and the "shareholder or financial theory" of the firm formulated by Friedman. "Under the guise of asceptic, value-neutral, amoral and 'scientific' theory, immoral business and management practices have in fact been promoted." Prophecies tend to be self-fulfilling in the social sciences because the knower cannot be separated from the actor.
Behind these oversimplified theories is "an unenlightened subservience to mathematical models as the only vehicles worthy of the name of science." While math may be neat, "real life is messy." I like Sison's call for a new theory of the firm grounded in realistic and ethical views of human nature that acknowledge the symbiotic relationship between working toward a common goal and perfecting the self.
Sison also moves readers nicely through a number of case studies that approach Weberian like "ideal types," from "corporate despots and constitutional rulers" to "aristocratic and oligarchical corporate governance regimes." Finally in that framework, he reviews an example of a "corporate democracy" and a "corporate polity."
In democracies, "the majority that governs pursues their own particular interests," whereas in a polity "the many that participate in governance seek the good of all, the common good." Democracies, which strive after particular interests within a legal framework characterized by "an emphasis on justice as equality and freedom in the best, and doing whatever one likes in the worst, of cases," are seen as less noble and inspiring than polities, with their greater focus on the common good.
Sison provides good critiques of United Airlines (the democratic model) and IDOM (the polity model), pointing to where they failed to live up to ideal types. However, I was disappointed that he did not conclude by positing a new theory of the firm that would draw on the lessons of Aristotle.
Instead, he ends with what I suspect he views as more practical advice. For example, those on nominations committees should look for loyalty, administrative capacity and justice as the most relevant characteristics in potential candidates.
Those on compensation committees should focus on moderation of temperance. CEO's should be more interested in virtues rather than excessive pay. Aristotle, he notes, "advocated the education of desire," such that "people would not crave more than what they actually need."
The compliance committee should strive for the spirit of obedience to the law, especially in small matters for "small errors or faults are always easier to remedy or rectify than bigger ones."
At bottom, Sison emphasizes the need for corporate governance to analyze and evaluate not only how changes impact the firm but how they cultivate virtues in those who govern the firm. Only virtue can ensure delivery of the good, since we must depend on virtue to ensure the rules are properly interpreted and implemented. Sison would place less emphasis on developing foolproof instruction manuals and more on developing virtuous habit and customs, since "it is only from habit and custom that the law could draw force and strength."
"The key to good governance ultimately lies in the education of the governors or rulers," writes Sison. It is a powerful notion, sure to be embraced by university professors and associations focused on training, such as the NACD. While in no way wishing to diminish the important role of education, I wish Sison had continued with a further exposition of how democratic and polity based business models could be improved. What fertile conditions foster both the common good and the proper education of virtue in employees and leaders? How can we restructure corporations to encourage active engagement in decision-making and the development of virtues in individual participants? I'm looking for a follow-up.Corporate Governance and Ethics: An Aristotelian Perspective (New Horizons in Leadership Studies Series) Overview"Corporate Governance and Ethics" is an illuminating and practical reading of Aristotle's Politics for today's corporate directors. With a deft synthesis of ethics, economics and politics, Alejo Sison elevates the discussion of corporate governance out of the realm of abstract rules and structures into a more effective form of Aristotelian politics. He argues that corporate governance is a human practice where subjective, ethical conditions outweigh the mastery of techniques, since the firm is not a mere production function but, above all, a community of workers. Corporate governance issues are discussed in a holistic fashion, using international case studies to embed the discussion in environments defined by their economic, legal and cultural systems. One of the author's key messages is that reform starts with the ethical and political education of directors. Alejo Sison uses an integrative approach to corporate governance that incorporates ethical-political considerations with the economic and legal dimensions of issues. He backs his theoretical claims with a series of case histories including Fiat from Italy, Cheung Kong Holdings and Whampoa Limited from China, Banco Popular from Spain and United Airlines from the US. He provides a special focus on the education of corporate directors in accordance with the principles of Aristotle's Politics. This accessible book will appeal to corporate directors, executives and managers; academics and students with an interest in corporate governance, leadership and ethics, corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility; and, modern readers of Aristotle's virtue theory and politics in relation to business ethics.

Little Blue Penguins: Tales for Making the Transition to Leadership ReviewI love how the book is comprised of a series of short stories, each one illustrating a very clear lesson to be learned. I made it a habit of reading only a few of the stories at a time so that I could carry the lesson with me throughout the day. Very entertaining and enriching! The book also closes with very clear action steps that you can take to extend your leadership abilities. As an entrepreneur, I find this book to be an invaluable resource for dealing with group and team projects. Well done!Little Blue Penguins: Tales for Making the Transition to Leadership OverviewLITTLE BLUE PENGUINS & OTHER STORIES FOR THE TRANSITION TO LEADERSHIP "Strengths can become weaknesses and turn on you when you least expect it." Dr. Richard Z. Gooding The skills that made you a star performer can get in the way and prevent you from becoming an effective leader. The key to making this transition is to first recognize the skills of leadership as different and separate from being a good employee. Secondly, to make this transition you have to begin to practice and develop this different skill set. This book lays out a model of the general skills including teamwork, goal setting, and challenge; a leader needs to exercise to be effective. The leadership model in this book is explained through a series of short stories. At the end of each tale there are a series of questions to help the reader draw out how it relates and how to begin applying the lessons immediately. PRAISE FOR THE BOOK: I just finished reading the Little Blue Penguins book and found it both helpful and entertaining. The vignettes were easy to read and extremely useful in making you think about leadership issues/situations. It is written in such away that having a discussion will be very easy to do. A great little book that will make it a "must read" for my staff. - Peter A. Hofstetter, FACHE, CEO Northwestern Medical Center, St. Albans, VT

Six Sigma For Business Leaders: A Guide To Implementation ReviewThis book is succinct, practical, and sound. It's helped me get started planning for a major organizational deployment of Six Sigma. The best thing about it is that it covers all the bases orienting the reader to why six sigma is worth doing, priorities for aligning it with your business needs, and what you need to get in hand preparing to set up six sigma in your organization. You'll need other guides, too, of course. (Leading Six Sigma by Snee and Hoerl is another terrific reference for getting oriented to what's worked and what hasn't in various organizations' deployment of Six Sigma.) But I'd definitely recommend checking out Six Sigma for Business Leaders.Six Sigma For Business Leaders: A Guide To Implementation OverviewAn easy-read summary of the best practices associated with the Six Sigma approach; as Greg Watson puts them into a context for senior management to use as a guideline for implementing Six Sigma in their companies. It is intended to support leadership teams as they design their Six Sigma initiative and manage the execution of Six Sigma through aligning it with their business strategy. This book supports executive- and champion-level Six Sigma training for business leaders and process owners. This practical text, answers fifty questions that an organization must address to initiate, develop, and sustain a successful Six Sigma deployment. Some sample chapter titles are:- What does an executive sponsor do?- How can Six Sigma improve financial value?- Why is a formal project charter important?- What is the DMAIC problem-solving process?- How does the Improve step of DMAIC work?Winner of the ASQ - Philip B. Crosy Medal. Author and Philosopher of the Global Quality Community

Human Capital: What It Is and Why People Invest It (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) ReviewAs an avid reader of business books and a management consultant myself, I cannot say enough good things about this deceptively straightforward, yet truly great book. Davenport does what other business authors do not typically set out to do: he engages both your mind and your heart. Through the use of metaphors, stories, and real-life case examples, he outlines a sound conceptual framework for understanding employees as investors. Without resorting to glib cliches and "soft-headed" truisims, he builds a logical and convincing case that outlines how any organization interested in greatness can unleash the potential that resides in every employee. By conveying a deep and profound respect for the power and talent of people, he challenges the "architects" and leaders of organizations to create environments that will bring out the best in everybody. By emphasizing the reciprocity of the employee-employer relationship, he shows us how any organization can create and deliver a deal(or deals)that will attract, retain, and motivate the best talent available.Human Capital: What It Is and Why People Invest It (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) OverviewNo longer mere company "assets," today's in-demand workers have become free agents who can and do invest their ability, behavior, and energy-their human capital-in the companies of their choice. And the companies they choose, the companies that will win in the marketplace, will be the ones that know how to create and deliver the best return on that investment. In this book, author Thomas O. Davenport explores the dynamics of this emerging workplace phenomenon and describes specific strategies that companies and workers can use to build mutually beneficial relationships in the new knowledge economy.

Future Search ReviewIn this book, Marvin R. Weisbord and Sandra Janoff describe a three-day program to help organizations develop a future plan. Their conference is designed to unite groups of people from different areas of an organization so they can create a program together that they all support. Typically, the conference includes 50 to 70 people who review the past, explore the present environment, create future scenarios, identify common ground and make action plans. The program encourages dialogue and working together as peers.
Future Search suggests how you might organize this program yourself, from setting up the agenda to planning the logistics. Because the book is a specific, practical guide for a particular type of conference, it will primarily interest those leaders and managers who want to put on such a program. We at getAbstract recommend Future Search as a good hands-on tool for companies, non-profits, government agencies or other organizations that want to hold a future planning conference.Future Search OverviewThis book explains how future search conferences -- where people with a stake in an organization gather to generate creative strategies -- can be most effective.

The Secret to GE's Success: A Former insider Reveals the Leadership lessons of the World's Most Competitive Company ReviewFirst, a disclaimer: unlike most (all?) of the previous reviewers, I'm not a GE alumnus. So I can't opine as to how intense will be the waves of nostalgia this book may induce in you if you currently work or previously worked for that company.
For outsiders, this book describes some interesting history. But I was disappointed at the relative shallowness of the discussion. The book seems designed to be read during a flight from L.A. to Chicago; the author duly adheres to commandment #1 of contemporary business book writing, namely don't trust your reader to be able to concentrate on one topic without interruption for more than 1.25 pages. (It also doesn't add depth that he relies on websites for most of his references.) Compared to, say, Robert Burgelman's study of Intel, "Strategy is Destiny", this book is very unsatisfying if you're interested in strategy. Considering that the author had been a senior corporate strategist at GE, one could reasonably have hoped for more.
Instead, the lion's share of the discussion is about the personalities and decisions of GE's leadership, and issues of succession. Even strategic issues are refracted through this leadership lens. Not that this was uninteresting -- but unless you're a CEO or a board member of a company, you aren't going to be able to apply these lessons on the job.
The author's decision to structure the book chronologically rather than, say, thematically, constrained him to draw edifying strategic conclusions from each of GE's administrations, even when the performance of some of them had been less than exemplary. As a result, some of the "takeaways" can be a bit banal, such as "Review your strategy from the top to the bottom and make sure it is internally consistent" (@ 69). Sometimes the advice seems inappropriately retro or unsubtle, e.g. using Edison's experience to justify patenting everything and litigating aggressively (@ 17). This ignores other possible ways of getting value from IP portfolios, as well as the fact that managing the costs of filing, litigating and maintaining multinational patent portfolios is a much bigger headache today than in Edison's time. The author tells us to judge business practices by the standards of their day, rather than the present; OK. But whether those historical practices can tell us much useful for the present has to be judged by the standards of today. And those standards include globalization, antitrust regulation in the US and EU, hair-trigger financial markets, and many other factors that have changed radically during GE's 126-year history.
Nonetheless, the most interesting aspect of the book for me was the discussion of GE's management team from 1922 until the early years of the Second World War, especially CEO Gerard Swope (who served about as long as Jack Welch). As amazing as it sounds, Swope was a Socialist. When the Depression hit, he and chairman Owen Young instituted a variety of progressive benefits policies, including offering all employees a 4-day work-week (to avoid having to fire 20% of the workforce) and profit-sharing. They also invited the CIO to unionize the company, which allowed GE to avoid strikes until the late 1940s (under Swope's successor). As an adviser to FDR, Swope became the prime architect of Social Security, among other New Deal programs. At the same time, Swope and Young also instituted a number of very smart, very capitalist moves that enabled the company to grow under the so-called "Benign Cycle" based on GE's consumer products and power generation systems product lines. To think that there were such complex and idealistic business leaders in the past -- now, *that* made me feel nostalgic. The Secret to GE's Success: A Former insider Reveals the Leadership lessons of the World's Most Competitive Company Overview

The Drucker Foundation Self-Assessment Tool (SAT II) Set, (includes the Revised Process Guide & 1 Participant Workbook) (J-B Leader to Leader Institute/PF Drucker Foundation) ReviewI've served on several non-profit and for-profit boards in the past 30 years. It seems to me the two non-profits of interest to me now have lost their way; each board is floundering and the CEO doesn't really understand the role of the CEO, the role of board members (and the board) and none of us understand the mission, our reason for doing what we do. After reading Drucker's book on managing the nonprofit organization, I KNEW we were in trouble and I had a sense of the solution.
When I got Drucker's Five Questions book, I followed up by getting this text. It took me only a few hours to buy copies for each board member of both organizations. I'm now setting up visits with each director, giving them a copy of this booklet for their review.
This text is a great tool for any non-profit -- or for-profit corporation, too.The Drucker Foundation Self-Assessment Tool (SAT II) Set, (includes the Revised Process Guide & 1 Participant Workbook) (J-B Leader to Leader Institute/PF Drucker Foundation) Overview"This is a time to shape the future--precisely because everything is in flux. The Change Management Pocket Guide and CD Bundle ReviewThe change management pocket guide provides some excellent forms for those already familiar with the process. Some forms are obscure and may be less useful. Rather than forms, dedicating some of the guide to step by step procedures would have been more useful. The guide would be highly useful to an HR specialist rather than an engineer trying to develop a method for evaluating how his workforce will be affected by a change.
Overall, this book will be useful.

Human Resource Management ReviewThe textbook is ok as far as college material is concerned. Not much difference between the 9th and 10th edition which was disappointing. Text book companies just trying to make a buck off college students.Human Resource Management OverviewByars and Rue's, Human Resource Management, 7/e, emphasizes the theoretical and practical aspects of HRM. The theoretical material is presented throughout the text and highlighted via a marginal glossary. The practical aspects of HRM are presented through lively and pedagogically effective examples placed throughout the text, as well as in the end-of-chapter materials. The new edition reflects changes in the business world in general, and the HRM function within organizations, since the previous edition was published.

Development of Professional Expertise: Toward Measurement of Expert Performance and Design of Optimal Learning Environments ReviewDevelopment of Professional Expertise is perhaps the finest book I've ever read on how to generate great individual and group performances, and I've read more than 400 books on the topic. Indirectly it shows how ineffective traditional talent management really is at many organizations. Using terms like "work-sample testing, engagement simulation, and after-activity reviews," it provides the reader with a toolbox of approaches that can be applied in any type of organization. The variety of authors and case studies provides extraordinary breadth and depth on the topics of objectively measuring performance and ways to improve it. I can't think of a better investment for any business manager who wants to improve performance throughout his or her organization, or part of an organization.
My favorite parts of this book were the actual methods for improving performance, which include engagement simulation, cognitive apprenticeship, processing activities, modeling, and problem-based methods. My on-going professional quest is to find ways to improve group performance because I believe groups are the fundamental unit of any organization. No individual creates and delivers value to customers in a vacuum. That value is created and delivered by groups of people. Organizations don't create new products or services. It is groups within those organizations that create the new products and services. Consequently any methods that can be applied to improve group performance are very valuable in my opinion.
Even though on page three, it says, "The primary focus of this book is on individual performance," I still believe these methods for improving performance can be applied to groups as well even though it may require some tweaking of the methods.
An additional strength of the book is the breadth of examples and authors. This theme of developing professional expertise was looked at from the eyes of more than 30 authors, all of whom seem to know the content of their chapters very well. This enriched the overall perspective that the reader gained from the book. It would be impossible for any one person to have that much breadth of knowledge and experience.
Development of Professional Expertise: Toward Measurement of Expert Performance and Design of Optimal Learning Environments OverviewProfessionals such as medical doctors, airplane pilots, lawyers, and technical specialists find that some of their peers have reached high levels of achievement that are difficult to measure objectively. In order to understand to what extent it is possible to learn from these expert performers for the purpose of helping others improve their performance, we first need to reproduce and measure this performance. This book is designed to provide the first comprehensive overview of research on the acquisition and training of professional performance as measured by objective methods rather than by subjective ratings by supervisors. In this collection of articles, the world's foremost experts discuss methods for assessing the experts' knowledge and review our knowledge on how we can measure professional performance and design training environments that permit beginning and experienced professionals to develop and maintain their high levels of performance, using examples from a wide range of professional domains.

Employee Engagement: Tools for Analysis, Practice, and Competitive Advantage (TMEZ - Talent Management Essentials) ReviewWhat can be done to harness the "discretionary" effort of employees? Distinguishing between job satisfaction--mere contentment or satiation--and a deeper connection to work and workplace, the authors "define engagement in terms that connote energy and provide a... set of principles on which any organization can create and sustain a more engaged workforce."
The book begins with a theoretical focus, defining engagement and making the case for an engaged workforce. Readers learn how engaged employees say it feels to be engaged in their work and what engaged employees look like to those around them. The authors make careful distinctions between engagement and the superficially similar constructs of satisfaction and commitment. The discussion expands to the role of trust, justice and fairness in creating a work climate conducive to engagement. Personality factors such as conscientiousness of both employees and supervisors play an important role as well.
The second half of the book delivers practical advice. Chapter Four discusses how to conduct an employee engagement survey that diagnoses four factors: Capacity to Engage, Motivation to Engage, Freedom to Engage and Strategic Focus of Engagement. Chapter Five describes how to interpret engagement survey results and craft action plans that target improvement of the appropriate engagement factors. Chapter Six explores the possible downsides of engagement--such as burnout and workaholism--that occur when there is an imbalance between employee investment in work and perceived return on that investment. The book closes with an annotated slide show--suitable for convincing senior managers about the power of engagement--and a useful reference section.
The book is recommended for organizational development professionals who are already familiar with the basics of survey research and employee development. It can help them apply these skills to the emerging demand for employee engagement interventions. Employees might also read it to decide how to cope with their organizations sudden interest in their level of engagement. It is a well-written guide that achieves a good balance between theory and practice.Employee Engagement: Tools for Analysis, Practice, and Competitive Advantage (TMEZ - Talent Management Essentials) OverviewProviding both practical advice, tools, and case examples, Employee Engagement translates best practices, ideas, and concepts into concrete and practical steps that will change the level of engagement in any organization.
Explores the meaning of engagement and how engagement differs significantly from other important yet related concepts like satisfaction and commitment

Make the Impossible Possible: One Man's Crusade to Inspire Others to Dream Bigger and Achieve the Extraordinary ReviewBefore purchasing this book, I was lucky enough to hear Bill Strickland speak at a conference luncheon in Chicago. Prior to the speech I had never heard of the guy, and therefore didn't know what to expect. I certainly didn't imagine I'd witness possibly the best, most uplifting speech I've ever heard in my life. When Strickland mentioned in his talk that he had a book being released, and that he wanted his book to zoom to No. 1 on the best-sellers list, I sat in my chair with the immediate thought that I'd be more than obliged to help him out with his goal. Frankly, the more people who know about this man and his message, the better off the world will be.
Like his speaking style, Strickland's words on paper are fairly plainspoken and to the point. He's accomplished some amazing things and is a beacon of inspiration, but onstage and in book form, Strickland won't necessarily wow you with dazzling buzz words or an excitable manner. Thankfully, he steers clear of religion and the clichéd "10 Steps" a person needs to follow in order to become an overnight sensation. Instead of rehashing the usual banter, Strickland tells the story of his life. He believes people need to follow success on their own terms, using their heart and mind as a guide. In this world of high-strung, fake, successful know-it-all types who believe they have all the answers, I frankly find Strickland's laid-back persona very refreshing and appealing. To be honest, while watching him talk and after reading his book, I couldn't help but wish that more people like Strickland would get into politics or even run for president.
So what is Strickland's main message? Basically that EVERYONE should have a shot at a good life and a chance to display his or her potential, no matter what that person's race or socioeconomic status is. In Strickland's own words within the book: "Every human being, despite the circumstances of his or her birth, is born full of potential, and the way to unlock that potential is to place individuals in a nurturing environment and expose them to the kind of stimulating and empowering creative experiences that feed the human spirit." Strickland's method of feeding the human spirit is not through social programs or feel-good seminar sessions that define what it means to be poor. His vision is much more ambitious but also much more helpful: change social policy and the educational system by creating inner-city schools that look less like prisons and more like his uplifting Manchester Bidwell facility.
Strickland came from very humble beginnings in Pittsburgh, where he watched his once proud and diverse neighborhood turn to shambles by the time he hit high school. Though Strickland himself went through a period of intense self-doubt and aimlessness as a young man, due to the ghetto he grew up in that so fiercely attempted to inhibit ambition, his ability to rise above negative habits and make something of himself is both impressive and endearing. Sure, Strickland doubted himself early on, but you get the feeling it wasn't for very long. This is a guy, after all, who made great things happen for himself -- and, more importantly, for others -- during his teenage years.
I've often heard it said that when you're living in poverty and surrounded by countless negative elements, it's extremely difficult to bust out of those circumstances and move on to a more hopeful way of life. Well, though it wasn't an easy journey by any means, Bill Strickland is an example of a guy who sprung out of his harsh hometown circumstances without ever even leaving town. Unlike so many others who "make it" in this world and move away to greener pastures, Strickland decided to remain in his own corner of the world; he immediately began saving the world there, which he has done in a major way. Strickland did so by starting an art center that grew by leaps and bounds after a sluggish beginning. His gravitation toward pottery and great art is itself charming to read about, and it's always impressive to discover someone whose own passions spread outward to help or inspire others.
As is expected from a man who has worked so hard to make his world a better place, Strickland experienced numerous roadblocks in the pursuit of his varied dreams. (One of his dreams included becoming an airline pilot.) He writes about both his setbacks and his accomplishments, making sure to relate how both the positive and negative occurrences in his life can help his readers during their journey. This is a great story about a genuinely nice, well-rounded, passionate, altruistic person who does pretty much everything he does for the betterment of his own soul -- which just happens to enhance other people's lives.

People Styles at Work: Making Bad Relationships Good and Good Relationships Better ReviewOf the several books I have studied on similar topics, this was one of the easiest to read through and apply. Although the title says People Styles at Work, it is equally applicable in personal life as well. The focus on studying behavior and inferring "style" from the same is much easier accomplished than trying to figure out the "temprament style" based on Myers Briggs.
The two dimensions of Assertiveness and Responsiveness, and the concept of above / below the middle for each of these dimensions gives 4 quadrants; one for each of the styles. This makes it convenient to understand the 4 styles, and also the shades within the styles.
I have benefited tremendously - if you are new to this topic it will serve you well to take notes as you read; create a cheat sheet of the characteristics for each style. Then for some time carry the cheat sheet with you, and refer to it often as you observe people's behaviors. Over a period of time, you will pickup the nuances of how to recognize the styles, and succeed in your interactions with others - despite them, and despite yourself... Enjoy!People Styles at Work: Making Bad Relationships Good and Good Relationships Better OverviewThis text asserts that it is possible to overcome personality conflicts by understanding other people's differences instead of merely reacting to them emotionally. It presents a behavioural science model for understanding four different "people styles", and explains how readers can: identify their own style and how they appear to others; relate effectively - no matter how others react to them; create common ground with different people while retaining their own individuality; and evaluate other people's "people styles" and discover how to "flex" their style to match.

The Change Leader's Roadmap: How to Navigate Your Organization's Transformation (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewIf you are involved in organizational change, including the introduction and rollout of new systems, steering company culture and/or reengineering this book is a gem. What sets it apart from other books on the subject is that it has no fluff - it jumps directly into what you need to do and how you need to do it to meet your change objectives.
What I like is the step-by-step approach that is process- and project-oriented. As a process the approach is provided as a change process model that meshes with the phases, activities and tasks that are required to effect the change. Each of these are explained as they are introduced in the book, and are summarized in the appendix. This makes it easy to quickly develop a work breakdown structure, determine resources and create a schedule using project management software.
I also like the way the authors sequence the activities and the thoroughness with which they examine details and provide advice, questionnaires and other useful information and tools to cut through the complexities of the change process.
Among the growing pile of books I have read on the subject this one is the most pragmatic and provides the clearest path to effectively planning for and implementing change. The Change Leader's Roadmap: How to Navigate Your Organization's Transformation (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview

Whale Done : The Power of Positive Relationships ReviewWhenever Ken Blanchard (one of my favorite authors) comes
out with a new book, I usually rush to read it . . . so when I
saw that WHALE DONE! THE POWER OF POSITIVE
RELATIONSHIPS had just been released, I got hold of
a copy and devoured it in one sitting.
You'll be able to do so, too, in that it is real short . . . but
don't be fooled into thinking that there's not a lot of "meat"
contained in its 128 pages . . . Blanchard, along with
coauthors Thad Lacinak, Chuck Tompkins and Jim
Ballard, takes a simple tale and uses it to get you
thinking about how both whales and people perform
better when you accentuate the positive . . . that information
may sound basic, but it is far too often never used.

The story revolves around a gruff manager who visits
SeaWorld and is impressed with how animal trainers
of killer whales can get them to perform amazing
acrobatic leaps and dives . . . he begins to see how
these same techniques could be applied to his
business life, as well as his situation at home . . . in
addition, he learns the difference between "GOTcha"
(catching people doing things wrong) and "Whale
Done!" (catching people doing things right).
I particularly liked the many examples that were used,
and the fact that these could be applied to countless
work and home situations.
There were many memorable passages; among them:
"The point here is that progress--doing something better--is
constantly being noticed, acknowledged, and rewarded.
We need to do the same thing with people--catch them
doing things better, if not exactly right, and praise
progress. That way, you set them up for success and
build from there."
"Killer whales can 'take out' any other animal in the
ocean. We sometimes use that information when we're
working with dog trainers. Some of them scold and yell
at their animals. They use choke chains and sometimes
hit them. When they talk about that kind of treatment, I
ask them, 'If your dog weighed eleven thousand pounds
like Shamu, the whale, how would you treat him? Would
you use a choke collar or smack him around?' I don't
think so."
If you don't hire people on a performance review curve,
why grade them on one?
My only criticism is that some of the material seems
recycled from Blanchard's first bestseller, THE
ONE MINUTE MANAGER . . . but maybe that's not
such a bad thing, in that I still consider this his best
work . . . and a "must" read for anybody who has not
yet had the pleasure of experiencing it.Whale Done : The Power of Positive Relationships OverviewWhat do your people at work and your spouse and kids at home have in common with a five-ton killer whale? Probably a whole lot more than you think, according to top business consultant and mega-bestselling author Ken Blanchard and his coauthors from SeaWorld. In this moving and inspirational new book, Blanchard explains that both whales and people perform better when you accentuate the positive. He shows how using the techniques of animal trainers -- specifically those responsible for the killer whales of SeaWorld -- can supercharge your effectiveness at work and at home. When gruff business manager and family man Wes Kingsley visited SeaWorld, he marveled at the ability of the trainers to get these huge killer whales, among the most feared predators in the ocean, to perform amazing acrobatic leaps and dives. Later, talking to the chief trainer, he learned their techniques of building trust, accentuating the positive, and redirecting negative behavior -- all of which make these extraordinary performances possible. Kingsley took a hard look at his own often accusatory management style and recognized how some of his shortcomings as a manager, spouse, and father actually diminish trust and damage relationships. He began to see the difference between "GOTcha" (catching people doing things wrong) and "Whale Done!" (catching people doing things right). In Whale Done!, Ken Blanchard shows how to make accentuating the positive and redirecting the negative the best tools to increase productivity, instead of creating situations that demoralize people. These techniques are remarkably easy to master and can be applied equally well at home, allowing readers to become better parents and more committed spouses in their happier and more successful personal lives.
