How to Profit from the Art Print Market ReviewSo much of what you read today concerning any business advice comes from the other end of the horse. But Barney's book is a must-read simply because he was in the art business for nearly 20 years! He knows about art--from how to make it to how to sell it. If you're an artist looking to represent himself or herself, this book's wisdom is invaluable. It's been my experience, having also been in the art business for 13 years, that most artists don't know how to market themselves or sell their stuff. A lot of the art you see isn't necessarily the best of what's out there, it's just better marketed than some of the other stuff.
Take advantage of the experience Barney brings to the table. Years with DECOR magazine, the Bible of the art trade, and with the DECOR Expo trade shows. He's seen the good, the bad and the ugly...and he's seen how to market it. Even if you, the artist, isn't necessarily planning to market yourself, get this book, read it and then pass it along to the person or persons who will be marketing your stuff.
The bottom line is that the print market is the most lucrative part of the art market, unless you're a Monet or a Van Gogh, and who is? But it's also the part of the market where you can easily lose whatever money you throw into it...unless you know how it works and how to work it. Barney's book, "How to Profit from the Art Print Market," does exactly that. HIGHLY recommended! How to Profit from the Art Print Market OverviewHow to Profit from the Art Print Market provides insights, advice, examples, and resources intended to demystify the arcane world of art print marketing. Barney Davey has authored this handbook of practical advice for visual artists seeking to enter the art print market. The book is a result of his experiences and perspective culled from advising and observing leading art publishers and print artists in three decades. It details how artists can utilize the print market to take control of their career and create a profitable business from their original work. The wealth of benefits for visual artists in the print market include: secondary income from originals in print; third stream income from licensing; greater awareness for their work; diversifying their pricing; and keeping pace with demand for their originals to name a few. Given these advantages, it is surprising to find other fine art business and marketing books offer scant coverage of the print market. This dearth of information makes the details and insight offered in How to Profit from the Art Print Market invaluable. The book takes readers through a continuum of decisions artists must make to find success as a published artist. The hierarchy begins by helping artists define a clear goal of their career aspirations pertaining to commercial success. It moves through deciding whether to self-publish or to seek a publisher, assessing, and setting realistic goals based on available resources. It finishes with cogent advice on the multitude of actions necessary to succeed after settling on the best path to follow. In addition to specifics on self-publishing and finding and working with a publisher, the book offers advice on effective use of advertising, tradeshows, publicity and coaching on identifying trends, finding inspiration, Website and email marketing, licensing and more. Any visual artist with the desire to enjoy commercial success will find this book inspiring and informative.

Make the Impossible Possible: One Man's Crusade to Inspire Others to Dream Bigger and Achieve the Extraordinary ReviewBefore purchasing this book, I was lucky enough to hear Bill Strickland speak at a conference luncheon in Chicago. Prior to the speech I had never heard of the guy, and therefore didn't know what to expect. I certainly didn't imagine I'd witness possibly the best, most uplifting speech I've ever heard in my life. When Strickland mentioned in his talk that he had a book being released, and that he wanted his book to zoom to No. 1 on the best-sellers list, I sat in my chair with the immediate thought that I'd be more than obliged to help him out with his goal. Frankly, the more people who know about this man and his message, the better off the world will be.
Like his speaking style, Strickland's words on paper are fairly plainspoken and to the point. He's accomplished some amazing things and is a beacon of inspiration, but onstage and in book form, Strickland won't necessarily wow you with dazzling buzz words or an excitable manner. Thankfully, he steers clear of religion and the clichéd "10 Steps" a person needs to follow in order to become an overnight sensation. Instead of rehashing the usual banter, Strickland tells the story of his life. He believes people need to follow success on their own terms, using their heart and mind as a guide. In this world of high-strung, fake, successful know-it-all types who believe they have all the answers, I frankly find Strickland's laid-back persona very refreshing and appealing. To be honest, while watching him talk and after reading his book, I couldn't help but wish that more people like Strickland would get into politics or even run for president.
So what is Strickland's main message? Basically that EVERYONE should have a shot at a good life and a chance to display his or her potential, no matter what that person's race or socioeconomic status is. In Strickland's own words within the book: "Every human being, despite the circumstances of his or her birth, is born full of potential, and the way to unlock that potential is to place individuals in a nurturing environment and expose them to the kind of stimulating and empowering creative experiences that feed the human spirit." Strickland's method of feeding the human spirit is not through social programs or feel-good seminar sessions that define what it means to be poor. His vision is much more ambitious but also much more helpful: change social policy and the educational system by creating inner-city schools that look less like prisons and more like his uplifting Manchester Bidwell facility.
Strickland came from very humble beginnings in Pittsburgh, where he watched his once proud and diverse neighborhood turn to shambles by the time he hit high school. Though Strickland himself went through a period of intense self-doubt and aimlessness as a young man, due to the ghetto he grew up in that so fiercely attempted to inhibit ambition, his ability to rise above negative habits and make something of himself is both impressive and endearing. Sure, Strickland doubted himself early on, but you get the feeling it wasn't for very long. This is a guy, after all, who made great things happen for himself -- and, more importantly, for others -- during his teenage years.
I've often heard it said that when you're living in poverty and surrounded by countless negative elements, it's extremely difficult to bust out of those circumstances and move on to a more hopeful way of life. Well, though it wasn't an easy journey by any means, Bill Strickland is an example of a guy who sprung out of his harsh hometown circumstances without ever even leaving town. Unlike so many others who "make it" in this world and move away to greener pastures, Strickland decided to remain in his own corner of the world; he immediately began saving the world there, which he has done in a major way. Strickland did so by starting an art center that grew by leaps and bounds after a sluggish beginning. His gravitation toward pottery and great art is itself charming to read about, and it's always impressive to discover someone whose own passions spread outward to help or inspire others.
As is expected from a man who has worked so hard to make his world a better place, Strickland experienced numerous roadblocks in the pursuit of his varied dreams. (One of his dreams included becoming an airline pilot.) He writes about both his setbacks and his accomplishments, making sure to relate how both the positive and negative occurrences in his life can help his readers during their journey. This is a great story about a genuinely nice, well-rounded, passionate, altruistic person who does pretty much everything he does for the betterment of his own soul -- which just happens to enhance other people's lives.

slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations ReviewI rarely review books, but this one was such a waste that I'd feel guilty if I didn't at least TRY to persuade you not to buy. The main problem with the book, as other reviewers have alluded to, is that it sort of tries to BE a design masterpiece rather than teach you. The design is interesting, but it is to the point that the content is subordinated to the design. There are maybe 5 pages worth of useful content.
Another irritant to me is that this is by far the most commercial book I've ever seen (more ads than a magazine). It seemed that every few pages I was being told to buy this book, or buy all of some other guys books. There is a two page section that is taken from Guy Kawasaki's blog. The whole thing is incredibly derivative (but shallow).
Finally, and this I can take responsibility for, it didn't meet my needs because I am not Al Gore, nor am I the CEO of a company. If I gave a presentation in the style of this book I'd be laughed out of the office. I'm an analyst, and the warm and fuzzy slides would not be good. Duarte's advice on data intensive slides? "Both [of Stephen Few's] books should be on your shelf along with everything Edward Tufte has written."
I have two Tufte books and they are virtually identical, I don't see myself buying his others (and they suffer from the same lack of relevance to corporate analysts). Disappointing.slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations Overview
No matter where you are on the organizational ladder, the odds are high that you've delivered a high-stakes presentation to your peers, your boss, your customers, or the general public. Presentation software is one of the few tools that requires professionals to think visually on an almost daily basis. But unlike verbal skills, effective visual expression is not easy, natural, or actively taught in schools or business training programs. slide:ology fills that void. Written by Nancy Duarte, President and CEO of Duarte Design, the firm that created the presentation for Al Gore's Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, this book is full of practical approaches to visual story development that can be applied by anyone. The book combines conceptual thinking and inspirational design, with insightful case studies from the world's leading brands. With slide:ology you'll learn to:

Connect with specific audiences
Turn ideas into informative graphics
Use sketching and diagramming techniques effectively
Create graphics that enable audiences to process information easily
Develop truly influential presentations
Utilize presentation technology to your advantage

Millions of presentations and billions of slides have been produced -- and most of them miss the mark. slide:ology will challenge your traditional approach to creating slides by teaching you how to be a visual thinker. And it will help your career by creating momentum for your cause.

Guide to Non-Traditional Careers in Science: A Resource Guide for Pursuing a Non-Traditional Path ReviewThis book was originally loaned to me by an administrator at my graduate school. I borrowed it twice, for several months each! I finally bought the book because it is such a great reference. It gives overveiws of broad areas, such as law, business, writing and publishing, scientific journalism and education, both formal and informal. For each section, there are bios and interviews with people holding various positions within the field. And there are great tips for how to prepare yourself for the change, as well as things to expect after the leap (for example, many of these careers are a one-way change, meaning the door to research closes). However, the most valuable part of the book (and the reason I purchased it) is the contacts with trade organizations. For each area, there is a list of several organizations, listing who they are, what the mission is, what they offer and how to contact them. Bottom line, if a lifetime of benchwork and grantwriting doesn't seem like you, but this book. You might find yourself identifying with a career you never would have thought about otherwise.Guide to Non-Traditional Careers in Science: A Resource Guide for Pursuing a Non-Traditional Path OverviewOffering practical advice and stories from scientists and professionals, this guidebook aids the reader in evaluating and finding career opportunities in non-academic research fields. It demonstrates that choices are available, providing many examples of fields (for example publishing, law, public policy and business) in which people can use their scientific training to nurture a satisfying professional life. Yet it also acknowledges that there are trade-offs involved with any veer from the traditional path.

ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career ReviewI'm an emerging artist who's been shooting for the past couple of years. I've done some shows in the non-profit realm, but only in the past few months have I been actively trying to figure out the ins and outs of the gallery scene.
For months now, I've been scrounging for the most basic information: How do for-profit galleries operate? What kind of contractual/financial obligations are required? How do you properly document your work? I've gone to workshops, interviewed artists, and dug through a lot of junk on the internet...
Only to find that everything I needed (and lots more) was in this book.
This is the definitive how-to book on running a fine art business (from the artist's side), specifically in regards to working with galleries. They don't offer any secret formulas for success, but instead dish out best practices for presenting yourself as professionally as possible.
What amazed me most was the depth of subject matter this book covers. It offers everything from sample legal forms to explicit instructions on how to pack your work for shipment. They use a very open and honest writing style throughout. Instead of coming across as preachy or snobbish, the authors sound more like a good friend letting you in on the secrets of the industry.
An interesting device they use throughout is to include relevant quotes from art professionals on almost every spread. These tie in directly with the subject matter of each section and represent the perspectives of artists, curators and gallery owners. It's one thing for the author to say what he or she thinks, but another thing when you get other voices add to the mix.
My only complaint about the book is a very minor one. While the book is striking in its design, I question the use of a bold sans serif for the body text throughout the book. There's enough white space and leading to make it work, but it seems a choice of aesthetics over practicality.
I don't often get this jazzed about books (especially not over a how-to manual). But I've seen firsthand what a lack of comprehensive resources there are for artists trying to figure out the how's and what's of the art world. This book does a magnificent job of filling that void and I'd recommend it to any artist who's trying to get established.
ART/WORK: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career Overview Find Out What They Didn't Teach You in Art School The most comprehensive guide of its kind, Art/Work gives artists of every level the tools they need to make it in an art world so competitive one dealer likens it to "The Sopranos, except nobody gets killed." Whether you're an art school grad looking for a gallery, a mid-career artist managing a busy studio, or someone just thinking about becoming a professional artist, this indispensable resource will help you build your career and protect yourself along the way. Unlike other creative professionals, visual artists don't have agents or managers. You have to do it all yourself, at least until you find gallery representation -- and even then, there are important business and legal issues you need to understand to stay in control of your career and ensure you're being treated fairly. Heather Darcy Bhandari, a gallery director, and Jonathan Melber, an arts lawyer, walk you through these issues so that you can essentially act as your own manager and agent. They show you, for example, how to tackle business basics such as tracking inventory and preparing invoices; how to take legal precautions like registering a copyright and drafting consignment forms; how to use promotional tools like websites and business cards; and how to approach career decisions such as choosing the right venue to show your work. In addition to drawing on their own experiences, Bhandari and Melber interviewed nearly one hundred curators, dealers, and other arts professionals, in cities across the country, about what they expect from and look for in artists. The authors also talked to a host of artists about their careers and the lessons they've learned navigating the art world. The book is full of their entertaining anecdotes and candid advice. No matter what kind of artist you are -- or want to be -- this book will help you. Art/Work covers everything you need to know to succeed, saving you from having to learn it all the hard way -- and letting you spend more time making art.
