Lost Souls: Burning Sky ReviewI like the ghosts in the story. The ghosts are called lost souls. The main character is Nathan. The story starts with his 13th birthday. He is the only person that can see or talk with ghosts in the home frequency after his 13th birthday. I like the story because Nathan has the power to communicate with lost souls and to travel through the frequencies. Each frequency is like a different world. When he looks through frequencies, he can see objects that are buried underground or in a wall. He has a little help from his cousin to solve the mystery of who murdered John Montoya, a police officer.
The book even comes with a board game. It is the same game that Nathan plays in the story.Lost Souls: Burning Sky Overview

All My Life for Sale Revieweh? I was immediately attracted to the cover of this book. I know, you can't judge a book by its, etc. Well, let me tell you John Freyer had more stuff than my two slighty-past-teenagers combined. He had stuff you thought you threw away, he had stuff you saw last week at a yard sale, he had stuff you saw at an antiques store. The photos, writing and results are entertaining and indicative of the "one man's trash" theory of stuff in general. I was struck by the kindred spirits John encountered as he made his odyssey to visit his former stuff; all in all, entertaining, thought provoking, and certainly worth a conversation or two. Made me wonder, "what if everyone sold all their stuff at the same time.....?" Picture the postal deliveries, and the friendliness which stuff-swapping could engender. I would have given this 5 stars, really consider it 4.75 rather than 4. Add this book to your stuff. All My Life for Sale Overview

One Clown Short ReviewIf you have ever worked for a big corporation and wonder how they stay in business with the dim-witted decisions the upper management makes this book will provide you with a funny insight into the "clowns" that run businesses. You will find yourself saying, "Hey, we have that clown working for us, too!" This book is a quick read and is perfect for those who need a bit of laughter in their day. My only question is, why are circus peanuts orange? One Clown Short OverviewMandy Maloney needs a job. She's had a successful run of flipping burgers at a popular fast food establishment, but the call to higher aspirations and a disapproving mother have finally forced her to flee to the classifieds. Soon she finds herself accepting an unlikely dream job- sales training at a circus supply company with great pay and great benefits, marred only by an aloof, sexist boss and a series of strange, surreal events. After befriending her "sane" coworkers, Gary and Violet, Mandy begins to find that things are even stranger, and more sinister, than they seem.

Broke Is Beautiful: Living and Loving the Cash-Strapped Life ReviewI'm an artist and as I write this am extremely broke. I think that "broke" is a relative term; if someone who was making $200,000 a year was laid off and found themselves with $10,000 in the bank and an unemployment check coming in for $400 a week they would think they were broke and this would most likely be true if you consider what their expenses probably are. With the money I make in my chosen profession, if I had $1,000 in the bank and no other money coming in I would think I was rich.
Ms. Lee is an excellent writer and what speaks to the point I just made is that she teaches you in this book a great perspective on how to view "broke-ness" and live a "broke lifestyle". Personally I feel the book is of more value to artists than those in what I like to refer to as "civilian" professions, for the simple reason that she is an artist and it seems to come from that perspective. That being said there are certain things even I would not engage in, such as diving through dumpsters looking for food that is still good. This is portrayed in the book as somewhat of a hobby for the upper middle class, which I'm assuming is an attempt to say "and you see, you thought only the homeless do this!" Again the artists' perspective at work; I don't see executives who have lost white collar jobs doing this sort of thing. I'm not saying that Ms. Lee doesn't back this up with examples of folks who do engage in this practice, including one who is a college student in NC who has a blog detailing his exploits, I just don't feel it is as widespread as it is portrayed. I will admit that I have found furniture pieces in this way, and she talks about that as well.
One section I really loved was when she discusses not falling into the trap of what society views as normal regarding at what age you should be married, have reached your career success, had kids, etc. So true. People get so caught up in that these days, but once again I feel it is artists more than most because it can take so long to establish any kind of success, if you even reach the point of success at all. This principle can be universally applied, however. I'm in my 40s, a bit older than the author, so I completely understand this point. Societies pressure to fit some "norm" when we are adults can be worse than any peer pressure we ever experienced as adolescents.
Ms. Lee discusses making a living from different sources so you don't rely on any one employer to be your sole source of income. As a freelancer I believe strongly in this concept as I'm not a 9-5 type of person. I temp when I have to and always hate it. I admire the way she has come up with different ways to make an artistic living and I try to go that same route. Bravo. Once again, however, I'm not sure if people in more standard professions will apply this. They will have to be willing, like the artist, to think totally outside the proverbial box.
The links in the back should have been more carefully researched; one of them concerning bartering (I won't list it to avoid giving these people publicity) was really just a cheap web portal with a bunch of useless links. Not the author's fault that people put these things up but I feel it shouldn't have been listed; perhaps it was legitimate before the publication of the book. Of everything listed Craigslist is the most viable, in my opinion, and unless you live in a cave you are already aware of it. Even with that site you have to take a position of "caveat emptor" or "trader/barterer-emptor". I recall using it when I was forced to leave an apartment and had to get rid of some furniture; it worked but I encountered some real loons in the process. If a second or updated edition comes out these links ought to be more thoroughly investigated.
There is something in this book for everyone who is having money issues, even if you don't find everything useful. All in all a good read and a nice job.Broke Is Beautiful: Living and Loving the Cash-Strapped Life OverviewThe economic downturn has forced nearly everyone into a life of limited means, but author Laura Lee was broke before it was cool. She won't tell anyone to clip coupons or forego their morning latte-in fact, she won't give any guidance on how to be saved from a dark financial destiny. Instead she provides readers with a psychological how-to full of fun tidbits. Broke is Beautiful is an insightful compendium of history, inspiration, facts, and humor that all celebrate the lack of money as a gateway to more serenity, self-awareness, and yes, even security. In the tradition of Alain de Botton's How Proust Can Change Your Life and Eric Wilson's Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, here is an unconventional take on a subject that is relevant to us all. It is quirky comfort for the (literally) poor soul: offering historical and geographic perspective, ponderings on consumerism and credit scores, and even recipes for ramen noodles.

Disorientation: How to Go to College Without Losing Your Mind ReviewDisorientation is specifically designed to help educate young Catholics on the threshold of leaving home for college and the "Wild West" (so to speak) of modern ideologies with which they will be bombarded upon entering the classrooms. The idea is that if they know what something is (progressivism, multiculturalism, hedonism, and so forth) then they can identify it up front and not fall prey to replacing solid Catholic teachings with skewed ideas. Fourteen essays by top Catholic writers explain and put into context these ideologies which so many people think are "just naturally the way things are." It is edited by John Zmirak so there is a reliable light touch with tongue firmly in cheek that permeates the book. (For the record, I think this is a good thing, especially if you are aiming at the college-bound.)
Let's face it. Chances are that your child has been exposed to these ideologies long before heading off for college. Most of those ideas are communicated through television, movies, and pals who they see every day. Talking about these things intelligently at home is the best way to make sure that everyone understands just why what the Church teaches is true and where those other ideas have skewed truth. If your kids are going to college, sure go ahead and get them a copy. But you don't have to wait that long. This book does a terrific job of helping us understand things from a proper point of view. Get a copy for yourself now. And one for the kids ... no time like the present when it comes to understanding how our culture thinks versus how the Church does.Disorientation: How to Go to College Without Losing Your Mind Overview
Every year, thousands of young Catholics leave their homes for higher education at our nation s colleges and universities. Very few realize, however, that from orientation day onward, they will be indoctrinated with a vision of reality that is very different from the values their families hold dear. Sadly, many of our young people will fall prey to one or more of the dominant ideologies engrained in their college education, ideologies that can lead them away from the Church and, ultimately, their faith in God. Students who are not taught how to think critically or who lack the tools needed to sift through the logic of these positions are easily swayed by the smooth sophistry of the intellectual elite.

For this reason, fourteen of the top Catholic writers in America professors, priests, journalists, philosophers, and theologians have come together to dissect the trendy ideas that can lead young Catholics away from the Church. Disorientation is intellectual ammunition for every college student and parent, as it breaks down the history, analyzes the appeal, and debunks the empty promises of such wildly popular errors as:
Hedonism Relativism ProgressivismModernismScientismFundamentalismFeminismMulticulturalism...and more.
Edited by John Zmirak (author of The Bad Catholic s Guide to Good Living and editor of Choosing the Right College), this book is guaranteed to get college students thinking hard about what their professors are telling them and what they should really believe.

Prayer: the Key To Organizing Chaos ReviewJudy did a great job relating to a woman's everyday conflict with keeping things in place and not losing your mind. Uncle John's Unsinkable Bathroom Reader (Uncle John's Bathroom Reader) ReviewYou have to give the Bathroom Readers' Institute credit. Twenty-odd years ago they hit on a winning formula and haven't looked back since. Thousands of pages later here comes version 21, all 541 pages of it! And, just like its predecessors, it delivers the goods - tons of quirky yet fascinating facts and bits of trivia.
As with other Bathroom Readers, BRI has divided the info into categories such as Bathroom Lore, Fads & Flops, Sports, Origins, Forgotten History and Creatures Features along with new categories like Canadiana. Features are broken down into Short (Quick Read), Medium (2-3 pages), Long and Extended.
It's probably just me but I couldn't work up the same enthusiasm I once had for the latest Bathroom Reader, hence the 4 star rating. As much as I enjoyed much of the book, I have to admit I skipped some sections. Maybe just a case of Bathroom Reader Burn-out!?!
Having said that, I don't doubt trivia buffs, lifelong learners, etc. will enjoy this latest offering of odd yet interesting info. Recommended.

Julie's Gift: Memories of London ReviewI just read 'Julie's Gift' written by Kevin Kirsch, a husband who is not a feelings sharer, but through this novella lets us all know (including his wife) that he does have deep feelings. It is a nice light read that may make you look at your unromantic partner a bit differently since it reminds you that just because feelings are not shared doesn't mean they're not felt. The plot is not riveting and you won't find a car chase, but that's the best part. It revolves around a couple's anniversary trip to London, England. The husband admits his idea of a trip is from the couch to the fridge, but goes out of love for his wife. It unfolds from there. The coolest thing about this book is that it was penned in secret by the husband and presented to her as a Valentine's surprise! Julie's Gift has great sample itineraries (how they actually spent their days in London) as well as the author's Top Ten London Travel Tips for the Guys (funny and useful list).
Not everyone is romantic or able to share feelings aloud, and many of those people are men. This book is a thoughtful and dare I say passionate shout to his wife to tell her that even when he doesn't say so, he is happy and lucky to be with her.Julie's Gift: Memories of London OverviewKevin and Julie travel to London. Kevin loathes sightseeing. Julie is the quintessential tourist. Kevin ends up enjoying the trip but doesn't tell Julie. 40: A Doonesbury Retrospective ReviewFirst, I have to admit that I'm a lifelong Doonesbury fan, so I'm a bit biased, but this book is a huge and beautifully produced volume. From the same folks who produced the Complete Far Side and the Complete Calvin and Hobbes, with the same attention to detail and quality. The selection of strips is excellent, and there were quite a few, particularly Sunday strips from the early years, that I don't think have ever been reprinted before (and I have all the early paperbacks and every big anthology). The reproduction is excellent - and either they were all reproduced from the original art or the book was designed to make it appear as if they had. Either way, the art looks great. And Trudeau gives some new and unique perspective to each character and his 40 years with the strip.
On the downside, I found it odd that they printed some strips out of order and some publication dates that they gave were obviously incorrect. And I do wish they'd included more early Sunday strips, since as I said, many of these have never been reprinted. Since this was supposed to be a Doonesbury retrospective, I also would have liked to have seen some coverage of Doonesbury in other media (the animated TV special, the Life and Rolling Stone magazine features, the Broadway show that was actually in-continuity and moved the characters in the strip forward) as well as some of the few merchandising products that GBT sanctioned through the years.
Now - to explain the title of this review... Seeing this book, which Trudeau says represents about 13% of all the published Doonesbury strips, has made me really hungry for a complete reprinting, like IDW Books is doing with the fun, but less deserving Bloom County. I know that unlike other strips getting the "complete" treatment (Peanuts, Dick Tracy, Bloom County, etc.) Doonesbury is still an ongoing production, but if they started now, it would take 10-15 years to get the entire body of work in print. I hope that GBT is still well and producing work at that point to worry about that issue. But this is a body of work that cries out for a high quality complete archive. For now, I guess we'll have to be content with this beautiful, giant sampler.40: A Doonesbury Retrospective Overview

The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid (Geronimo Stilton, No. 2) ReviewI thought this was a GREAT book! This my favorite Geronimo Stilton book so far! My favorite character (besides Geronimo Stilton) was Professor Spitfur. Geronimo's grandfather sends him to Egypt to do an interview. The most exciting part of the book is that Geronimo gets to go to Egypt. The description of the airplane ride is very funny. The scariest part is when the Professor gets knocked out and Geronimo is left in the dark!
I like the way the book is printed with the words being different colors and styles. It has lots of pictures and maps too. It makes it easier for me to read it. I am going to read all fifty titles as they are translated from Italian to English! The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid (Geronimo Stilton, No. 2) OverviewEnter the world of Geronimo Stilton, where another funny adventure is always right around the corner. Each book is a fast-paced adventure with lively art and a unique format kids 7-10 will love

Who Is Geronimo Stilton?
That's me! I run a newspaper, but my true passion is writing tales of adventure. Here on Mouse Island, my books are all best-sellers! What's that? You've never read one? Well, my books are full of fun. They are whisker-licking good stories, and that's a promise!

The Mystery of the Great Cheese Pyramid
I'm off to Egypt!I climbed onboard a crabby old camel that would take me across the desert to the Great Cheese Pyramid. There, among mummies and hieroglyphics, I would learn the secret of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient Mouse World....

Playing with God: Religion and Modern Sport ReviewThe author does outstanding research on the history of sports and how it has been interwoven within the structure of religion. I read every word. As a retired minister and pastoral counselor I was astonished as to how much sports and religion are competitive yet are parallel and both are interwoven into our modern faith and belief systems. I have a son who is an Offensive Coordinator in a local high school and I give it to him for his birthday. It's a great gift. I recommended it last Christmas to a friend to give to their father who enjoys sports and has everything. I also recommended it to my attorney to give to his law partner.
A great book thank you "Billy"
