The Rape of Alma Mater ReviewThis book is a "real page turner," an engrossing historical fiction. The reading experience includes some of the excitement that you would expect from a tale of international espionage; the plot follows a conspiracy that begins within the walls of two colleges, and then spreads across and beyond collegiate America. But, though this is fiction, its most fantastical elements are facts that your memory will verify as you recall America during the Vietnam era.
You will first be drawn into the world of two loving friends who, over a span of ten years, maintain their personal and professional values through a time of chaos, pressure, and corruption. This book will speak to you if you've ever wondered how college English classes acquired so many new "isms" or why the antiwar movement seemed to outlast the war itself.
As the story progresses, the students that we have met in the opening chapters have grown up, taking jobs, marrying, and starting families. One of them, a newspaper reporter, tries to document the censorship and political bias that her husband, a professor, encounters in his university. In this attempt she herself encounters censorship of a kind that we do not ascribe to American life. Her carefully researched story, instead of being accepted for publication, costs her her job.
Throughout its long span from the Vietnam War to 9/11, this story, though told colloquially, looks deeply into some of the vulnerabilities of free speech in America.
