The Modern Charity ReviewThis is a well thought out and sound business model for the new age of charitable organizations. The author using his own words lays out a game plan that has sound fundamental business practices, transparency to donors and has designed a duplicatable and adaptable non-profit model. Whether you are thinking of becoming a donor for this particular charity or perhaps launching your own, I recommend reading this book. The Modern Charity OverviewThe dream conveyed in this book is not small so hopefully I did it justice. It's not every day someone looks to take on a challenge in a place where even the local police and ambulances won't enter. The best way to describe it is going into the jungle to fight a lion with a toothpick but it's a good fight. Welcome to the Wild West of charity.

Grassroots Philanthropy ReviewBill Somerville is the President and Founder of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation. Born poor, he was the first in his family to attend college. Now, with 48 years experience in nonprofit work, he has written a short, passionate, and wise book, with Fred Setterberg, Grassroots Philanthropy: Field Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker. Bill recommends funding people, not projects. To get to know people, Bill suggests that funders push back from their paper laden desks, and go out into the community, not just to talk to grant-seekers, but to seek out high potential change agents, and get to know them, whether or not they have applied for a grant. To free up time for such direct engagement, Bill suggests ways to streamline paper flow. Bill's advice comes across as that of a man driven by an ethic of service. Those in need are not abstractions to him, nor statistics. With all that money in foundations, he seems to feel, surely more can be done right now to make a positive difference in the lives of people the funder can meet, and should meet, face to face. I can see this book being very helpful not only to salaried grant-makers at large foundations, but also to the founder and family members of unstaffed private foundations, or those who might have a donor advised fund, or just anyone who wants to make gifts not as transactions by mail, or online, but hand to hand, heart to heart, and eye to eye.Grassroots Philanthropy OverviewA veteran philanthropist calls for decisive, hands-on grantmaking.Bill Somerville believes that foundations can do a better job Grassroots Philanthropy explains how.Endless paperwork, bureaucracy, and beleaguered foundation heads bog down many bold new ventures. Thecowboy approachadvocated by Bill Somerville encourages philanthropists to actively engage with the community, meet people who are doing extraordinary things, and fund those in need quickly with a minimum of process and paperwork. Somerville s style is straightforward, urgent, emphatic, and persuasive. He encourages foundations to take calculated risks and to fund ideas for actual change, rather than for fact-finding reports that exhaustively sum up what s wrong with the world. This is an illuminating book for those in the foundation and nonprofit worlds alike. With an unprecedented transfer of generational wealth expected over the next half-century, it is also a call to the upcoming generation of philanthropists to step up and use their wealth to ensure that real change happens quickly and creatively.

Writing to Make a Difference: 25 Powerful Techniques to Boost Your Community Impact ReviewWriting to Make a Difference is one of the best written books that I have come across. You can tell that Massachi is very passionate about this subject and has researched tirelessly on the most effective methods on how to make a change. As one who is very interested in making a positive different in the world, the book has provided with a tangible way in which I can take action through writing.
At the time I purchased the book, the book was just selected as a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award. I went to the website and saw that the book is nominated for several other awards. After reading through this book you will see why. It is put together in an easy-to-read fashion with helpful images and tips in the margins.
One of the best things about the book is that it is organized in 25 chapters that highlight important steps in how to inspire people to make change. After reading about these strategies in detail, it is easy for one to go down a checklist of these 25 tips to be reminded of these strategies. Massachi also does a great job in providing clear examples that serve to put the twenty-five strategies in context.
If you are someone who wants to make a change, this is certainly a must for you to include in your library. Even if you are not with a nonprofit or organization that wants to influence others in a positive way, it would be helpful to read this book. It is a guide on how to do great things during the Information Age.Writing to Make a Difference: 25 Powerful Techniques to Boost Your Community Impact OverviewEngage your readers and boost your impact! ADVANCE PRAISE: 'Writing to Make a Difference' is a great balance of both instructional and interactive tips, tools, and exercises...and helps to lower the barrier for organizations that desire to tell their story in a way that captures both head and heart. -- Alandra L. Washington, Deputy Director, W.K. Kellogg Foundation This is an outstanding work, one of the best I have read in the genre, and of possible use in the university, for public relations and organizational communication courses. The writing lessons are succinct, the methods to convey them effective, and the style itself an example of professional brilliance. I recommend 'Writing to Make a Difference' because I know that it will. -- Michael Bugeja, author, 'Interpersonal Divide: The Search for Community in a Technological Age' and Director, School of Journalism & Communication, Iowa State University Massachi's voice sounds real and helpful. She herself uses the kind of detail that gives ordinary writing the power to shift readers attitudes and beliefs. Her breadth of examples is remarkable-- learn how dozens of organizations like your own write stirring messages. She includes one of the best treatments I ve seen of cross-cultural communication and how to recognize and avoid exclusionary language, plus a very helpful picky section covering exactly the editing errors people seem to make. Massachi says, Use words that your reader uses. Then she helps us see just who these readers are, what makes them tick, and what we need to say to them. I particularly loved the Ask Yourself questions that invite us to go deeper into what Massachi is teaching. --Louise Dunlap, Ph.D., writing coach, activist, and author, Undoing the Silence: Six Tools for Social Change Writing

Fundraising for Dummies ReviewIn case you've been trapped on a desert island for the past several years, IDG books has been publishing "Dummies"-themed books on every subject under the sun and moon, from Windows 2000 to sex. Fundraising for Dummies is a typically informative, easy-to-read, and useful guide to fundraising for nonprofit organizations.
With 28 chapters in five parts and appendices of checklists and how-tos, the book has loads of information for novice and intermediate fundraisers alike. In fact, it's also a pretty good reference for board members and volunteers involved in fundraising activities.
There is a chapter devoted to predictions on the future of philanthropy in the U.S., with one-paragraph explanations of brief statements, such as "E-giving Will Grow." Most of these predictions are obvious to nonprofit-sector experts (and especially those of us who participate on CharityChannel!). However, I must admit to being intrigued by the idea that "Nonprofits Will Rule!", meaning that, as more for-profits become regional and national in scope, local nonprofits will assume increasing local community leadership influence.
As good as this volume is in its general approaches and many helpful tips and techniques, do not mistake this book for a thorough treatment of the subject or any of its components. I was alarmed by its breezy assertion that nonprofit board service
"...is not as risky as serving on a for-profit board. Nonprofit board members are protected personally from liability in any legal action against their charitable organization..."
Haven't the authors heard of the IRS and Intermediate Sanctions? And, since nonprofit corporations are state-chartered (like their for-profit brethren), wouldn't liability vary from state to state, as well as depending on the facts and circumstances of each case? I would imagine that the D&O liability insurers would like to address this before the second printing!
One benefit of this book I found is one which I'm not sure is intentional. Grant writing is given short coverage in the appropriately-numbered Chapter 13 of the book, thereby providing two subtle reminders that grants are but a minor part of fundraising success.
Any reader interested in the subject will learn much from this book, as long as they don't take its accounting and legal advice too literally.

The World I Imagine: A Creative Manual for Ending Poverty and Building Peace ReviewWe've all thought about how we would change the world were we given the chance or asked. Debbie Jordan has taken the bull by the horns and put forward her thoughts on ending poverty and building a truly peaceful society, two things she feels go hand in hand.
This is a book richly overflowing with ideas. Well put together and eminently readable her thoughts broken down into a encyclopedic version of how to run the world, she works from the axiom that the cost for all basic personal goods and services would be collected as a basic tax that was no more then half the amount earned by the lowest paid fulltime worker on the planet.
Descriptions of how needs differ from wants, how placing everyone on a level playing field and updating systems that in some form, have been in place since medieval times, are just a selection of the ideas she touches on. Our healthcare system, the current political farce and education also are covered.
Skeptics will of course find flaws and rationalize that a total change in how we have come to view ourselves and live our lives would be necessary for this to work. But hey, what does every dialog with the taxi driver, every discussion in the break room and every chat at the beauty parlor land on, what a gosh awful mess we're in and how come no one can seem to find a way to change things.
Debbie Jordan may not have all the answers but if this little book gets into the hands of some of the movers and the shakers and a few grassroots groups with some backbone things could begin to change incrementally. Having a guide such as this one to open dialogs and get people thinking is our best bet of obtaining the peace we all have imagined.
The World I Imagine: A Creative Manual for Ending Poverty and Building Peace OverviewPeace Breeds Prosperity; Poverty Hinders PeacePeace and poverty cannot coexist. Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. Establishing and maintaining peace will take far more creativity, dedication, and hard work than war ever did. True peace would be much cheaper and far less traumatic than any war, but, to date, no one has been able to pull it off.The essays in this collection introduce creative ideas for ending poverty everywhere, in the hope that humans can finally build a truly peaceful society where everyone enjoys at least the basic benefits of prosperity, for the first time in history.
