The Modern Charity ReviewThis is a well thought out and sound business model for the new age of charitable organizations. The author using his own words lays out a game plan that has sound fundamental business practices, transparency to donors and has designed a duplicatable and adaptable non-profit model. Whether you are thinking of becoming a donor for this particular charity or perhaps launching your own, I recommend reading this book. The Modern Charity OverviewThe dream conveyed in this book is not small so hopefully I did it justice. It's not every day someone looks to take on a challenge in a place where even the local police and ambulances won't enter. The best way to describe it is going into the jungle to fight a lion with a toothpick but it's a good fight. Welcome to the Wild West of charity.

Grassroots Philanthropy ReviewBill Somerville is the President and Founder of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation. Born poor, he was the first in his family to attend college. Now, with 48 years experience in nonprofit work, he has written a short, passionate, and wise book, with Fred Setterberg, Grassroots Philanthropy: Field Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker. Bill recommends funding people, not projects. To get to know people, Bill suggests that funders push back from their paper laden desks, and go out into the community, not just to talk to grant-seekers, but to seek out high potential change agents, and get to know them, whether or not they have applied for a grant. To free up time for such direct engagement, Bill suggests ways to streamline paper flow. Bill's advice comes across as that of a man driven by an ethic of service. Those in need are not abstractions to him, nor statistics. With all that money in foundations, he seems to feel, surely more can be done right now to make a positive difference in the lives of people the funder can meet, and should meet, face to face. I can see this book being very helpful not only to salaried grant-makers at large foundations, but also to the founder and family members of unstaffed private foundations, or those who might have a donor advised fund, or just anyone who wants to make gifts not as transactions by mail, or online, but hand to hand, heart to heart, and eye to eye.Grassroots Philanthropy OverviewA veteran philanthropist calls for decisive, hands-on grantmaking.Bill Somerville believes that foundations can do a better job Grassroots Philanthropy explains how.Endless paperwork, bureaucracy, and beleaguered foundation heads bog down many bold new ventures. Thecowboy approachadvocated by Bill Somerville encourages philanthropists to actively engage with the community, meet people who are doing extraordinary things, and fund those in need quickly with a minimum of process and paperwork. Somerville s style is straightforward, urgent, emphatic, and persuasive. He encourages foundations to take calculated risks and to fund ideas for actual change, rather than for fact-finding reports that exhaustively sum up what s wrong with the world. This is an illuminating book for those in the foundation and nonprofit worlds alike. With an unprecedented transfer of generational wealth expected over the next half-century, it is also a call to the upcoming generation of philanthropists to step up and use their wealth to ensure that real change happens quickly and creatively.

Writing to Make a Difference: 25 Powerful Techniques to Boost Your Community Impact ReviewWriting to Make a Difference is one of the best written books that I have come across. You can tell that Massachi is very passionate about this subject and has researched tirelessly on the most effective methods on how to make a change. As one who is very interested in making a positive different in the world, the book has provided with a tangible way in which I can take action through writing.
At the time I purchased the book, the book was just selected as a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award. I went to the website and saw that the book is nominated for several other awards. After reading through this book you will see why. It is put together in an easy-to-read fashion with helpful images and tips in the margins.
One of the best things about the book is that it is organized in 25 chapters that highlight important steps in how to inspire people to make change. After reading about these strategies in detail, it is easy for one to go down a checklist of these 25 tips to be reminded of these strategies. Massachi also does a great job in providing clear examples that serve to put the twenty-five strategies in context.
If you are someone who wants to make a change, this is certainly a must for you to include in your library. Even if you are not with a nonprofit or organization that wants to influence others in a positive way, it would be helpful to read this book. It is a guide on how to do great things during the Information Age.Writing to Make a Difference: 25 Powerful Techniques to Boost Your Community Impact OverviewEngage your readers and boost your impact! Massachi, M.A., draws on her nearly 20 years of professional experience writing and editing for hundreds of socially responsible organizations. With passion and fresh insight, she reveals the top strategic insider techniques she has honed through her work as a successful grantwriter, editor, journalist, workshop instructor, and writing coach. ADVANCE PRAISE: 'Writing to Make a Difference' is a great balance of both instructional and interactive tips, tools, and exercises...and helps to lower the barrier for organizations that desire to tell their story in a way that captures both head and heart. -- Alandra L. Washington, Deputy Director, W.K. Kellogg Foundation This is an outstanding work, one of the best I have read in the genre, and of possible use in the university, for public relations and organizational communication courses. The writing lessons are succinct, the methods to convey them effective, and the style itself an example of professional brilliance. I recommend 'Writing to Make a Difference' because I know that it will. -- Michael Bugeja, author, 'Interpersonal Divide: The Search for Community in a Technological Age' and Director, School of Journalism & Communication, Iowa State University Massachi's voice sounds real and helpful. She herself uses the kind of detail that gives ordinary writing the power to shift readers attitudes and beliefs. Her breadth of examples is remarkable-- learn how dozens of organizations like your own write stirring messages. She includes one of the best treatments I ve seen of cross-cultural communication and how to recognize and avoid exclusionary language, plus a very helpful picky section covering exactly the editing errors people seem to make. Massachi says, Use words that your reader uses. Then she helps us see just who these readers are, what makes them tick, and what we need to say to them. I particularly loved the Ask Yourself questions that invite us to go deeper into what Massachi is teaching. --Louise Dunlap, Ph.D., writing coach, activist, and author, Undoing the Silence: Six Tools for Social Change Writing

Fundraising for Dummies ReviewIn case you've been trapped on a desert island for the past several years, IDG books has been publishing "Dummies"-themed books on every subject under the sun and moon, from Windows 2000 to sex. Fundraising for Dummies is a typically informative, easy-to-read, and useful guide to fundraising for nonprofit organizations.
With 28 chapters in five parts and appendices of checklists and how-tos, the book has loads of information for novice and intermediate fundraisers alike. In fact, it's also a pretty good reference for board members and volunteers involved in fundraising activities.
There is a chapter devoted to predictions on the future of philanthropy in the U.S., with one-paragraph explanations of brief statements, such as "E-giving Will Grow." Most of these predictions are obvious to nonprofit-sector experts (and especially those of us who participate on CharityChannel!). However, I must admit to being intrigued by the idea that "Nonprofits Will Rule!", meaning that, as more for-profits become regional and national in scope, local nonprofits will assume increasing local community leadership influence.
As good as this volume is in its general approaches and many helpful tips and techniques, do not mistake this book for a thorough treatment of the subject or any of its components. I was alarmed by its breezy assertion that nonprofit board service
"...is not as risky as serving on a for-profit board. Nonprofit board members are protected personally from liability in any legal action against their charitable organization..."
Haven't the authors heard of the IRS and Intermediate Sanctions? And, since nonprofit corporations are state-chartered (like their for-profit brethren), wouldn't liability vary from state to state, as well as depending on the facts and circumstances of each case? I would imagine that the D&O liability insurers would like to address this before the second printing!
One benefit of this book I found is one which I'm not sure is intentional. Grant writing is given short coverage in the appropriately-numbered Chapter 13 of the book, thereby providing two subtle reminders that grants are but a minor part of fundraising success.
Any reader interested in the subject will learn much from this book, as long as they don't take its accounting and legal advice too literally.

The Complete Guide to Writing Effective & Award-Winning Grants: Step-by-Step Instructions With Companion CD-ROM ReviewThe universe is filled with people with good ideas - ideas that could change the world, or at least a small portion of the world - if there was only a way to get the money to make them real. In fact, there is grant money out there for almost every noble idea, but most people who could quality for grant funding fail to get it, finding themselves overwhelmed by an intimidating and confusing process.
I personally know dozens of people - artists and writers, college bound students, inventors, small-business owners, home buyers and others whose lives would be improved if they could just find the money to fund their ideas.
For all those people, I highly recommend The Complete Guide to Writing Effective &Award-Winning Grants. They should keep it by on their desks .as their number-one resource for helping them get the funding they need to make their brilliant notions real.
This manual gives step-by-step information and includes everything anyone might need to know when they are looking for grant funding. From finding available grant programs, to knowing what grant funders want to know from you, to setting up a presentation - the directions are clear and concise and the information is comprehensive. This is a tool anyone even considering applying for grant funding should find extremely helpful. Everything is here between the pages, within easy reach, a tour guide to every stage of the grant writing process. There are even examples of winning grant proposals to help grant writers better understand what works and what does not.
The book covers grant writing for artists, teachers and students as well as helping find and win grant money for small business, historic homes, buying or fixing-up houses, even grants for research, charitable causes, volunteers and more. The guide can also steer you to sources of available grant money, both public and private. It gives guides to networking with the people who hold the purse strings and even explains how to target your search for grant money for the greatest chance of success.

Author Dianne Harris learned grant writing through trial and error. You can learn from her mistakes and her successes and write successful grants without the pain. While this book won't make grant writing easy - nothing can do that - it will make your grant writing more effective, helping you through the process to a successful conclusion. Even if you have written grants in the past, if you follow the advice given, you should find yourself more confident and more successful in this endeavor. The Complete Guide to Writing Effective & Award-Winning Grants: Step-by-Step Instructions With Companion CD-ROM OverviewEvery day federal, state, and local government as well as other organizations including corporations and foundations give out more than a MILLION DOLLARS IN FREE GRANT MONEY. A grant is essentially a gift. It goes to an organization, municipality, business, or individual to enable them to continue conducting their activities or research. You or your organization may be eligible for millions of dollars in free grant money. Grant money does not have to be returned or paid back. Unfortunately, many grants are not awarded because of improper filing procedures, and or poorly written proposals, and so literally millions of dollars go unclaimed every year.

Why Don't They Just Get a Job One Couple's Mission to End Poverty in Their Community (Nonprofitmaking Organizations) ReviewWhy Don't They Just Get a Job? answers the question that so many people throw out about those living in poverty. Often the assumption is that they COULD get a job if they tried. This book details the very real obstacles and barriers that many willing want-to-be workers face and shows how when they receive the proper training to obtain and retain jobs they can enter the work force and be productive resources for our country's future.
The question I have after reading the book is Why Don't People Stop Asking Why Don't They Just Get a Job. This is a book that will help agencies and individuals who are committed to raising people out of poverty. But it is also a book that will help people understand the underlying issues that prevent some people from finding and keeping jobs.
What the Phillips have done in Cincinnati is nothing short of amazing. Liane Phillips and Echo Garrett spin a good tale of how a retiring couple can make a difference not only in hundreds and thousands of lives, but in the fabric of a city. This should be a pilot program for every city in the country, but who would run the programs? Do other cities have resources similar to what the Phillips' provided for Cincinnati Works? I'd like to see this model spread across the country. Read it. Then find out what you can do to re-create something similar in your city. Why Don't They Just Get a Job One Couple's Mission to End Poverty in Their Community (Nonprofitmaking Organizations) OverviewWhy Don't They Just Get a Job? describes the journey and the incredible results of Dave and Liane Phillips' efforts to help those in poverty find their way to self sufficiency. Under the premise that existing job-readiness programs only focus on job placement and not retention, Dave and Liane Phillips created a poverty to economic self-sufficiency program with an 80 percent one-year employment retention rate. In the past three years this organization, Cincinnati Works, has brought $25 million in wages locally to over 1500 families. The not-for-profit offers a complete spectrum of free, lifetime employment services for the entry-level job-seeker to sustain and advance in today s work climate. The model is a winner of the 2009 Manhattan Institute Social Entrepreneur Award. Following its success, Dave Phillips is now volunteering as a consultant for similar programs in other cities.
