Innocent ReviewAuthor Joe Prentis strikes an amazing balance between gripping crime drama and emotionally charged, character-driven fiction. The action flows as effortlessly as watching an award-winning drama like Law and Order, and all the characters are so thoroughly developed that you sometimes forget they're fictional. The author's attention to detail is flawless and makes it easy to become totally immersed in the story--somewhat uncomfortable at times in this case because of the disturbing yet realistic plot.
I also admire the way the author relays gruesome, upsetting events without resorting to gratuitous descriptions or unnecessarily graphic scenes. It makes for a book that is completely satisfying from beginning to the unpredictable end!Innocent OverviewA phone call in the early hours of the morning shatters the tranquility of Sheriff Daniel Barrett's household when he finds out that the father of his fourteen-year-old daughter's best friend has been the victim of a brutal homicide. Viewing the body at the scene of the crime convinces Barrett that there is a monster loose in their town, and the deranged killer is poised to strike again. Barrett is in a race against time with a lab full of evidence that seems to lead nowhere, and a growing suspicion that everything is more complicated than it seems.

There is no narrative, it is a collection of pictures with the descriptions underneath. It contains information about the early settlers and the gradual development of the town. People familiar with the area will recognize the names mentioned, such as the Hatches, Bagleys, Kenneys, Underhills and Doblers. For anyone who has lived in this desert area, the book will bring back memories. A very nice compilation of early photographs.Twentynine Palms (CA) (Images of America) OverviewPres. Franklin D. Roosevelt recognized the beauty of this desert region of Southern California in 1936 when he created Joshua Tree National Monument, now a national park. But for 9,000 years, Native Americans had lived amid its monolithic rocks and strangely grotesque Joshua trees. Serrano and Chemehuevi Indians found a home at its Oasis of Mara, whose fan palms eventually gave Twentynine Palms its name. Cattleman Bill McHaney arrived in 1879, learned of gold ore deposits from the native people, and inaugurated an influx of prospectors seeking fortunes. In the 1920s, Dr. James B. Luckie of Pasadena discovered that the clean air and dry climate helped veterans with respiratory illnesses, and they homesteaded parcels of 160 acres. Artists, writers, actors, and composers later discovered Twentynine Palms, and a renaissance in the arts now includes studios, galleries, and world-class murals that adorn this gateway to Joshua Tree National Park.

Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing ReviewAs someone who spent 4 years working in Sing Sing, I believe I knew Mr. Conover while he was at Sing Sing and while I was not an Officer, I think I remember our paths crossing several times. I observed many of the same situations, emotions and observations as the author. In addition to his dead on portrayal of life behind bars, it was good to read about how the environment can have negative emotional effects on those who work there. It's about time someone told the truth about what goes on inside Sing Sing and how it can demoralize those who are simply good people trying to do job and earn a paycheck. The NYS Department of Corrections as a whole is in need of total reformation and Sing Sing is a prime example of why. I was skeptical when I picked up the book, as every account of prison life which I had previously read or seen seemed inaccuarate to me or slanted by inmate or administrative/political bias. After the first couple of chapters it was clear to me that this was a book written by someone with no agenda other then to tell the truth about life behind the walls at Sing Sing.Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing Overview
