Justified Conduct ReviewJustified Conduct hooked me from the first page and kept me intrigued throughout. It is an amazing book that I couldn't put down. I found my heart pounding as I threw myself into the intense scenes being described. I had to keep reminding myself this was just a story. Innocent ReviewAuthor Joe Prentis strikes an amazing balance between gripping crime drama and emotionally charged, character-driven fiction. The action flows as effortlessly as watching an award-winning drama like Law and Order, and all the characters are so thoroughly developed that you sometimes forget they're fictional. The author's attention to detail is flawless and makes it easy to become totally immersed in the story--somewhat uncomfortable at times in this case because of the disturbing yet realistic plot.
I also admire the way the author relays gruesome, upsetting events without resorting to gratuitous descriptions or unnecessarily graphic scenes. It makes for a book that is completely satisfying from beginning to the unpredictable end!Innocent OverviewA phone call in the early hours of the morning shatters the tranquility of Sheriff Daniel Barrett's household when he finds out that the father of his fourteen-year-old daughter's best friend has been the victim of a brutal homicide. Viewing the body at the scene of the crime convinces Barrett that there is a monster loose in their town, and the deranged killer is poised to strike again. Stepping Stones ReviewThis is a great read. Based on realistic people and familier places, a mystery evolves at an increasingly rapid pace to a remarkable climax. It is mostly set in Chatham, Mass on Cape Cod, which is described and depicted perfectly from its physical character to the characters who live there. I know this because I live in Chatham. There realy were military facilities at Stepping Stones and at the Coast Guard light house during WWII. Dark Tort: A Novel of Suspense (Goldy Culinary Mysteries) ReviewThe 13th installment in the Goldilocks Catering Mystery series starts out with a big thud...over a dead body that is. Now catering for the law firm of Hanrahan & Jule (H & J), Goldy Shultz trips over the body of good friend and paralegal-in-training, Dusty Routt, while entering the law firm late one evening. Goldy was to meet Dusty there for a cooking lesson, as Dusty wanted to learn how to cook from the skilled caterer. Goldy struggles to deal with the death of her neighbor and friend, who has struggled her entire short life. Her family has dealt with several tragedies including the death of Dusty's brother while in police custody, the blinding of her grandfather while he was imprisoned, and the statutory rape of Dusty while she was in high school. Dusty seemed to be pulling herself out of her catastrophic past with a new job at her uncle's law firm, and was seen wearing a very expensive bracelet before her death. Goldy is once again pulled into solving another mystery by the plea of Dusty's mother, and quickly learns that the case will not be an easy one to solve.
I have really enjoyed this series, and the recipes that go along with it. I love the interactions between Goldy and her husband, Tom, and the relationship with Marla. Arch's learning to drive was also a source of amusement in this book, as well. I do, however, feel sorry for Goldie with all of the tragedy in her life (she is always finding someone close to her that has died). She drinks coffee and espresso like crazy, and I cringe every time she reaches for another cup. However, the mysteries are great, and have a lot of twists to them. There were some elements to the story that were left open (hopefully for the next book in the series), and I loved the chance to "visit" these great characters once again.
The first book in the series is called "Catering to Nobody". Enjoy!

Bones to Ashes: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels) ReviewTempe Brennan's back in her tenth mystery. For those not in the know, Dr. Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist who divides her time between Québec and North Carolina. No stranger to personal trouble, she's an ex-alcoholic and single mother assigned to gruesome, personally dangerous cold cases. This time, Tempe's on the trail of her vanished childhood friend Évangéline Landry, a young Acadian who summered at Pawleys Island back when Tempe was a child. Tempe and Évangéline would spend the summers creating poetry and staging dramas as Évangéline shared her love of Longfellow's epic namesake poem (his Évangéline included a romanticized account of the Acadian deportation and its aftermath). One day, Évangéline Landry vanished without a trace, and for thirty years Tempe has longed to know what happened to her.
One of Tempe's coworkers in Québec wants her to look at a skeleton uncovered in New Brunswick, and Tempe starts to put together pieces that point to Évangéline. She is consumed with uncovering the truth behind her friend's disappearance at her own personal risk. As with previous novels, Reichs does her homework well. Acadia was an area of Eastern Canada originally settled by the French, who were later forcefully evicted by the British. Many exiled Acadians fled to Louisiana, where the name "Acadian" shortened to "Cajun." Next to Québec, New Brunswick has the largest percentage of Francophones in Canada (35% of the province is French-speaking).
Tempe's quest takes her to the small town of Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick. I admit, I was curious in Reichs' choice of town, because one of my favorite Francophone pop artists, Jean-François Breau, (Expose) is from Tracadie-Sheila, as is Star Académie winner Wilfred Bouthillier. One reason I love Reichs' books is because I lived in Québec and majored in Québec Studies, and she effortlessly manages to work in in-the-know elements of modern Quebecois culture. No mention of Breau or Wilfred, but Garou's Seul makes an appearance (in the first Temperance Brennan novel Déjà Dead, it was Roch Voisine's Helene).
Tempe's on-again, off-again romance with Detective Ryan is definitely off-again here. Ryan has his hands full with cold cases and personal problems, and although the two consult each other, there's precious little romantic involvement this time around. However, the vibrant cast of supporting characters fills the void.
As usual, there are dark subject matters here that may offend some, including post mortems and torture, exploitation and rape of minors, so consider yourself warned. The dialogue is witty and balanced, the pacing generally impeccable, although the ending seemed a tad rushed. Unlike some of the past few Tempe novels, I felt that this was an excellent effort that was truer in spirit to some of the first few Reichs novels. It generally doesn't stray from the realm of believability, and Reichs' expertise as a forensic anthropologist and her experiences living in Québec lend Tempe an unshakable credibility.

A Dose of Murder (Pauline Sokol Mysteries) ReviewPauline Sokol decides she is burned out from being a nurse for so many years. So, she quits her job. Then she realizes she has no job and thus no money to pay her many bills. Her best friend and roommate, Miles, sets her up with an interview with his uncle. Thinking she'd be doing office work, she soon finds out she will be an insurance fraud investigator. Something she knows nothing about. Since she doesn't get paid unless she completes an investigation, she sets out to quickly learns how.
After almost being caught, Goldie begins to give her some instruction. She also gets some direction when she ties up with Jagger in a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" type of situation. This takes her undercover in a local clinic, one her boyfriend just joined.
Can she do her surveillance work as well as help Jagger out with his case, through her undercover work, without wearing herself out, getting caught, or getting herself killed. As she stumbles on a body and tries to keep a level head when around hot Jagger, she finds herself in many hilarious situations.
I found myself laughing out loud so many times while reading this book. It is a quick, easy cozy to read. The characters are so much fun, the situations believable, and the plot well-written. I especially like the interaction of Pauline and Jagger, but Goldie is also a hoot. Her parents and uncle really add to the story as well. Her lack of experience does not detract from her ability to help solve this crime. I found it to be believable.
I look forward to reading many more Pauline Sokol books. I highly recommend this book.

Unfortunately, there's no time to find her true calling since rent is due, so she follows a hot job tip. Soon she is interviewing with the smarmy head of a medical insurance fraud investigation firm. Hired on the spot, with no qualifications except for her ability to impress the boss with her inspiring legs, she is thrown in headfirst with no clue about the biz. Pauline soon realizes that she can use her nursing skills to solve her first case, and with the help of hunky and mysterious fellow investigator Jagger, she learns the ropes––and the fact that this job is more dangerous than she ever imagined! But with the help of Goldie (the 6 foot tall transvestite with a heart of gold), Jagger, and her completely whacky, but totally loveable Polish family, Pauline discovers the tricks of the trade. And as she hits just about every bump in the road along the way, laughs and chaos ensue even as the investigation leads straight to murder!

The Walls of Jericho (Ben Kamal and Danielle Barnea Novels) ReviewYou can't spend too much time at Book Sales & Bookstores without stumbling upon the many books of Jon Land. But I'd managed to avoid reading one because of their generic Ludlumesque titles--Omega Deception, Doomsday Spiral, Gamma Option, etc. But this book grabbed my attention. With the end of the Cold War, the Middle East seems to offer the most fertile ground for thriller writers. Land has savvily set his 19th novel in the newly independent Palestinian West Bank. The story follows Ben Kamal, an American Arab policeman who has returned to his homeland to help train the Palestinian Police Forces, and Danielle Barnea, a female Shin Bet agent, as they join forces to track down a serial killer, Al-Dib "The Wolf".
This book is a marvel. It contains all that is best and worst in current writing. Land's story is exciting and the plot rockets forward. The characters are extremely likable. The opposition that Kamal and Barnea face from their own bosses & from a hostile populace add a terrific layer of tension. However, the book also has about three endings & just keeps going on & on; it would be much better less 75 pages. And it contains one of the most annoying creatures in modern detective fiction, the rogue hero, in this case ex-Colonel Frank Brickland, who will do the dirty work that our central heroes can not do--think of Hawk in the Spenser series.
With all that, I think if you're about to get on an airplane & you're looking for a good, quick, big-print read, you won't do much better than this one.

A Mortal Terror: A Billy Boyle World War II Mystery (Billy Boyle World War II Mystr) ReviewAnother great installment in the Billy Boyle series (detective series featuring a young Boston cop-turned-US Army Lieutenant who is sent to Europe during WWII to act as General Ike's personal investigator). In this mystery, Billy Boyle has to find a serial killer among the troops stationed in Caserta, Italy, in the days just before the battle of Anzio. Benn tackles the idea (as presented by one of the Army doctors) that, over prolonged exposure to combat, 98% of men will develop acute symptoms of combat fatigue (or what we would call PTSD). The other 2% would be sociopaths. At this late stage in the war, as Benn depicts it, the troops are no longer fresh; they have been fighting for months, have seen comrades taken down, and (almost across the board) are suffering from what they've seen. This web of fatigue has become a playground for one soldier who has NOT been affected by the horrors of war, and who can now take revenge on his resentments with impunity.
The mystery components are definitely competent and interesting, but for me the book really shines in its wartime storytelling.
