Schools and Societies (Sociology for a New Century Series) ReviewThis book was highly disappointing and uninformed. Firstly, the author seems to have a thin grasp on current understandings of global development, as displayed in chapters 2 & 3 on education in 'industrialized' and 'developing' worlds.
The book displays inconsistencies in thinking, and many seeming uninformed statments in the chapters on inequality.
I do not recommend this book, except as a way to learn objectively about the topics in education, removing the actual content.Schools and Societies (Sociology for a New Century Series) Overview
In Schools and Societies the author demonstrates that more than any other major institution, schooling and schools are political, and virtually everyone has opinions to voice and interests to promote. Steven Brint musters a wealth of comparative material to show how schooling around the world is shaped by social forces even as it tries to shape the societies of the future.

American Architects and Their Books, 1840-1915 (Studies in Print Culture and the History of the Book) ReviewThis volume of the Press's Studies in Print Culture and History of the Book series focuses on architects and their involvement in books. This involvement can be the effects particular books had on an architect or an architect's publication of books. In the era before architecture became a widely established discipline in universities, the books an architect sought out and studied on his own were the foundation of his practice. Such books rather than professors or courses influenced an architect's particular field and style. Many architects had extensive personal libraries; and architecture firms would have large office libraries. Before the days when national and regional associations such as the fledgling American Institute of Architects (founded 1857) set professional standards and educated the public on the role an architect could play in design of homes and public buildings, an ambitious and talented architect would publish his own books to "advertise his wares" with the aim of prompting conversation among his peers, drawing the attention of critics, and attracting clients.
The culture of books playing a central, formative role in educated and professional groups in the nineteenth century and into the early part of the twentieth could influence architects in different ways. In his short essay, the former Wellesley College professor and current chair of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission James O'Gorman shows how Melville's "antiurban" sentiments inhering in his description of a farmhouse in his short story "I and My Chimney" published in 1856 probably affected Frank Lloyd Wright in the development of his Prairie Style. Although O'Gorman cannot verify that Wright ever read Melville's story, the story nonetheless exerted a strong, though loosely-defined influence in that it expressed American culture's deep attachment to nature and enjoyment in one's home which Wright and many other architects sought to address. Elaine Harrington, former curator of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park, IL, closes her essay on Wright noting that throughout his "long architectural career...Wright made fine large library rooms and intriguing, smaller built-in book spaces" in homes he designed as signs of his recognition of the importance of books in his own life and the world of the clients he was working for.
"Antiquities of Athens" published in England in the mid 1700s was one prime book having a strong influence on American as well as European architects. This seminal work not only inspired a neoclassical architectural movement by reviving the subject, but with its many fine, detailed engravings, served as a model for architectural elements of homes, buildings, and monuments. Throughout the 12 essays with illustrations, other books having a demonstrable influence on American architects in the period covered are cited. Some of these are books done by leading, though not so well known, American architects.
The essays make for a deeper understanding of American architecture of the period by uncovering its sources. The period was for the most part pre-Modernist; when nature and rural life, classicist forms and references, and recognized authorities shaped architecture. Though it wasn't long before bustling life in crowded cities, skyscrapers and other outsized urban buildings, and internationalist styles came to dominate architecture, many of the works of this dying period are now a part of the nation's architectural heritage in historical preservation programs.American Architects and Their Books, 1840-1915 (Studies in Print Culture and the History of the Book) OverviewSince the Renaissance, architects have been authors and architecture has been the subject of publications. Architectural forms and theories are spread not just by buildings, but by the distribution of images and descriptions fed through the printing press. The study of an architect's library is an essential avenue to understanding that architect's intentions and judging his or her achievements. In this well-illustrated volume, a chronological sequel to "American Architects and Their Books to 1848," twelve distinguished historians of architecture discuss from various points of view the books that inspired architects both famous and not-so-famous, and the books the architects themselves produced. They examine the multifaceted relationship of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century architects to print culture—the literary works that architects collected, used, argued over, wrote, illustrated, designed, printed, were inspired by, cribbed from, educated clients with, advertised their services through, designed libraries for, or just plain enjoyed. The result is a volume that presents the intersection of the history of architecture, the history of ideas, and the history of the book. Changes in print culture during this period had a significant impact on the architectural profession, as revealed in these well-informed scholarly essays. In addition to the editors, contributors include Jhennifer A. Amundson, Edward R. Bosley, Ted Cavanagh, Elspeth Cowell, Elaine Harrington, Michael J. Lewis, Anne E. Mallek, Daniel D. Reiff, Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., and Chris Szczesny-Adams. Among the architects discussed are A. J. Downing, Charles Sumner Greene, James Sims, Samuel Sloan, John Calvin Stevens, Thomas U. Walter, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

MCSE: Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure Design Study Guide ReviewI've come to trust Sybex books to be the best single study guide to prepare for Microsoft MCP and Cisco tests. New Riders have consistantly proven as weak overviews, Osbourne (Syngress) books are often technically inaccurate.
With two glaring exceptions (the terrible 70-029 SQL Server Database Design guide and and the woefully poor editing on 70-240 MCSE Accelerated for Windows 2000), there's been a Sybex guide to compliment every IT professional test I've passed (somewhere between 12-15). Although nothing ever replaces first-hand experience, Sybex has consistantly given me something to start with.
This book draws heavily from the Author's lifetime of experience in the IT field, and it's pretty obvious he knew the exam objectives as he sat down to write. He speaks heavily of example, and segues perfectly into a corresponding exam objective.
Based on my skimming of other books on the topic, this one serves as the most solid foundation for what is on the test. Network Infrastructure Design, as you'll find out in just a few chapters, has more to do with meeting prescribed needs than laying the cables and setting up routers.
The best feature of this book is that it helps you empathize the situation of a company, pointing out their needs and what you're most likely to run into. If you can't listen to people and discern a setup that is most accomodating to their needs, while still working within a desired (often low) budget - it's not too late to choose a different elective for your Win2K MCSE.
That being said, if you're going to take this test, and buy ANY study guide, this should be your book. The only bigger mistake? Taking the test without a network design to your credit!MCSE: Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure Design Study Guide OverviewHere's the book you need to prepare for Exam 70-221, Designing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure:
Comprehensive and in-depth coverage of every exam objective
Practical information on designing a Windows 2000 network infrastructure
Hundreds of challenging review questions on the CD and in the book
Leading-edge exam preparation software, including a testing engine and electronic flashcards

Authoritative coverage of all exam objectives, including:
Analyzing business requirements
Analyzing technical requirements
Designing for Internet connectivity
Designing a wide area network infrastructure
Designing a management and implementation strategy

Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

Photographer's Market Guide to Building Your Photography Business ReviewI gave this book two stars because some reader might want to open a studio for children's photography. Anyone else looking to get into the photography business or improve photography business skills should probably look elsewhere.
The author's approach is to offer a topic related to the business of photography and to raise issues, but she seldom provides answers, and when she does, they are seldom of use to most photographers. For example, the author has a chapter on lawyers. In it she indicates the legal problems that a photographer might face, from copyright to leases. Instead of telling the reader anything about these subjects, she says to hire a good lawyer. As my kids say, duhh...! Similarly she says there are several different forms of ownership that a photographer can use. Therefore... consult a lawyer.
And when she does give advice, it is often wrong and dangerous. For example, she says that in determining whether a person is a contractor or an employee, one should look at whether a person does the same job for several different people. Actually, the government regulations provide 14 separate points that have to be considered with no one-point controlling. Several judicial nominees have learned how important this issue can be.
But where the author really misses the boat is on the issue of marketing. For any businessperson, including a photographer, marketing is perhaps the most important function. If you don't have income, you don't stay in business. But the tips the author gives only apply to studio photographers. Marketing is different for a stock photographer and an editorial photographer, and for all the specialties in between, but Orenstein seems to ignore this.
I don't understand why this book needed photographs, unless it was to meet the requirement for 320 pages. But if one is going to include pictures in a book aimed at photographers, they'd better be good. The pictures in this book are muddy black and white pictures on paper with a low reproduction quality.
Perhaps it's impossible to write a book about the photography business that applies to all the specialties in the game. I know that it is possible to write a useful book aimed at a specialist, because I have the example of John Shaw's "Business of Nature Photography". Even though a little dated, it is probably more helpful generally to someone getting into the photography business than Orenstein's book is.Photographer's Market Guide to Building Your Photography Business OverviewDisplaying the same wit and charm that made her Creative Techniques for Photographing Children a commercial success, Vik Orenstein shoots straight with photographers on what it takes to build a successful photo business. She combines big-picture thinking with a soft touch to deliver sound, practical advice on such core topics as developing a marketing plan, building a clientele, networking and maintaining creative fulfillment. This guide is a major asset for amateurs seeking a friendly overview of the business; established photographers delving into a new niche; freelancers interested in selling stock; photographers starting their own studio. At 320 pages, the book's similtaneous deep and broad treatment makes it an excellent companion to the business-focused introduction found in Photographer's Market. Vik also covers such important specialities as wedding, commercial and nature photography in individual chapters and frequently complements her own advice with that of industry experts.

TPM Reloaded: Total Productive Maintenance ReviewIf you think that you know about TPM, then think again. In this searching examination of the state of TPM practice as it stands today, Joel Levitt shows how and why modern practice varies from the original intent. In what might be a slap in the face to some practitioners and consultants, Levitt tells it how he sees it - and then backs it up with evidence.
However, what I really like about this book is that Levitt does not stop at pointing out the problems, he goes on to provide solutions. Using examples that stretch from the humble coffee machine in every café through to the Space Shuttle (and most things in between) Levitt explains what to do to design and implement TPM in the modern workplace. Importantly, this includes examining the application of TPM in different phases of the machine lifecycle.
Key topics include:
*The relationship between `Lean' and TPM
*A day in the life of a TPM shop
*Selling TPM to different stakeholders
*Achieving Autonomous Maintenance
*Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and different OEE models
*The application of RCA in TPM
*Addressing the `past sins' that both haunt us and create inertia for TPM initiatives
*Conducting `walk through' audits
*The implications for your CMMS and your MRP II interface
With sections that focus on `getting down to the nitty-gritty' and conducting `One Point Lessons' this book provides a comprehensive guide to implementation, training and achieving lasting success.
This well researched book includes references to, and quotes from, many leading thinkers in TPM, including leading Japanese executives and other international practitioners from many fields. The book also includes comprehensive references to further online resources, videos and articles.
In the introduction, Levitt reminds us that we need to `use all the capabilities of our people' and this book is set to be a key asset for anyone charged with taking their team on the TPM journey.
Phillip Slater
Operations Management Specialist, Consultant, and Author.
Author of Smart Inventory Solutions: Improving the Management of Engineering Materials and Spare Parts and A New Strategy for Continuous Improvement: 10 Steps to Lower Costs and Operational Excellence.
TPM Reloaded: Total Productive Maintenance OverviewThis is a challenging, innovative, and timely new look at implementing Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) by one of the field's leading trainers and authors. The book takes into account the economic upheavals of recent years and demonstrates that TPM is less about moving maintenance tasks to operations than moving accountability for aggregate output of the plant to operators. The author goes on to show that effective TPM - TPM reloaded -- requires a radical difference in management's view of the worker and even tougher, a radical change in the way workers view their own role.

Sociology (Cliffs Quick Review) ReviewThe author of this competent introduction to sociology is Dr. Zgourides, a former Eastern Orthodox priest. Dr. Zgourides previously authored several publications that engaged with coping strategies for dealing with anxiety and stress, including "Anxiety Disorders: A Rational-Emotive Perspective" (Macmillan, 1991)and "Don't Let Them Psych You Out!" (Loompanics Unlimited, 1993).
After his tour at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico, Dr. Zgourides has fluttered, at times anxiously, about a wide variety of halls of higher and further education across America. He has worked or continues to work as a clinical psychologist, certified acudetox specialist, massage therapist, and volunteer healthcare chaplain with specialties in mind-body psychology, anxiety disorders and phobias, sexuality, addictions, pastoral issues, and Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches to healing. He has held a wide variety of full-time and part-time positions at such institutions as New Mexico Military Institute (Roswell, New Mexico), Capella University (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Dallas Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (Dallas, TX), Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon), and the University of Portland (Portland, Oregon), where he was previously a tenured Assistant Professor of Psychology. Dr. Zgourides currently maintains a writing/consulting practice and assists as a staff researcher at Parker College of Chiropractic's Research Institute in Dallas, Texas. His wife, Christie Zgourides, is a former lecturer at a small Oregon liberal arts college and is now an online instructor of writing for Kaplan College, a for-profit corporation owned by the Washington Post Group.

With these credentials, Dr Zgourides has written a sound introduction to sociology, summarizing the major points of current sociological knowledge. After introducing readers to competing sociological perspectives and basic research methods, he discusses culture and socialization, social groups and social organization, crime and deviance, social and global stratification, race and ethnicity, sex and gender, economics and politics, education and statism, family, religion, health, population, mass media, and social movements in the context of social change.
Dr. Zgourides advises to "Ask and answer the following questions when deciding the validity of a piece of social research: Are the sociologists qualified to conduct sociological studies? What are their credentials? Are the sociologists associated with an academic institution, laboratory, or clinic?" (p26). As a participant observer amongst various institution engaged with the social sciences, Dr. Zgourides has an experienced eye for spotting what isn't right, which is reflected in this sound introduction to the field of sociology.Sociology (Cliffs Quick Review) OverviewCliffsQuickReview course guides cover the essentials of your toughest classes. Basics of the U.S. Health Care System ReviewThis textbook is a waste of money. I am currently pursuing my MHA after many years in the legal field. I wanted a textbook that would clearly and concisely explain the US health care system. This textbook does not meet my expectations. In fact, within the first few minutes of reading it, I actually found it contained misinformation. Page 6 states the polio vaccine was developed in 1933. Two sentences later it states it was developed in 1952! How am I to trust the other "facts" referenced when I, a person just commencing her health care education, am able to pick up this error, yet the author and editors failed to do so?Basics of the U.S. Health Care System OverviewThe health care industry currently provides over 13 million jobs with a projected 27 percent increase over the next decade the largest increase of any other industry. Given these trends, a basic understanding of the U.S. health care system is important to students across many disciplines including business, law, health administration, pre-medicine, nursing, allied health, public health, and more. This combination textbook and activity workbook gives students a fundamental understanding of the basic concepts of the U.S. healthcare system. Written with the undergraduate in mind, Basics of the U.S. Health Care System uses simple, reader-friendly language and features hands-on exercises that engage the student in active learning. Each chapter offers a vocabulary crossword puzzle, a vocabulary exercise, real life exercises, and Internet exercises.

Becoming A Chef - With Recipes And Reflections From America's Leading Chefs ReviewLet's not mince our praise: BECOMING A CHEF is one of the best books ever written about the back-of-the-house side of the restaurant business. Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page interviewed more than 60 top chefs for this entertaining and enlightening look at the culinary profession.
Jeremiah Tower (formerly) of San Francisco's Stars reveals that he originally wanted to be an architect. Todd English of Olives (Boston, etc.) reminisces about watching his grandmother make potato gnocchi. Andre Soltner, the living legend formerly of Lutece in New York City, waxes philosophical about love -- in his estimable opinion, the most important ingredient in any dish. Perhaps Norman Van Aken of Norman's in Coral Gables, Florida, sums it up best: "This is not a profession that you choose. It chooses you."
In addition to life lessons and some 50 recipes from the usual suspects (Alice Waters, Daniel Boulud, Emeril Lagasse, etc.), the book includes a brief history of the culinary profession; a chapter on opening and operating your own restaurant; and listings of culinary organizations, publications, and cooking schools in the U.S. and abroad.
For the uninitiated as well as those who have already found their calling in the kitchen, BECOMING A CHEF is a must-read.Becoming A Chef - With Recipes And Reflections From America's Leading Chefs Overview

Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing, Second Edition Review
Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing by Sarah B. Keating (ed.) (2006) has seven sections and 15 chapters as a practical guide for developing curricula at the ADN, BSN, entry level masters, specialty and advanced practice masters, and doctoral programs. Section one is introduction to the history of curriculum development and faculty role. Section two is about learning theories, education taxonomies, and critical thinking. Section three presents the external and internal frame factors for conducting a needs assessment for reviewing and developing curricula. Section four, curriculum development, addresses undergraduate and graduate components of the curriculum. Section five, curriculum and program evaluation, covers master planning for program and curriculum evaluation, application of educational evaluation models, and planning for accreditation. Section six adapts curriculum development and evaluation to staff development and client-centered health education. Section seven reveals issues and trends in curriculum development and evaluation. The chapters are written by 12 contributing authors. Keating writes "A curriculum is the formal plan of study that provides the philosophical underpinning, goals, and guidelines for the delivery of a specific educational program." Faculty is responsible and need a view of the curriculum as a whole. History is a strength of the book. Authors address the transformative and constructivist learning theories, the use of technology to deliver the curriculum, distance education and the measurement of program outcomes as part of total quality management. Both formal and informal curricula are diagramed. Chapters have a summary, discussion questions, learning activities, faculty learning activities and references. Leddy & Pepper's Conceptual Bases of Professional Nursing (Conceptual Basis of Professional Nursing (Leddy)) ReviewThis book may be one of the worst books I have had to read in my educational career. It is laden with cliches, like "Nursing is like a diamond." And when not using cliches it is either defining common sense like "lifestyle behavior changes" or regurgitating common theories in life and describing how they pertain to nursing. It really just lacks insight or useful organization of theories. If you really have to buy it for school there is not much you can do, but if you are a professor contemplating this book, know that I think it really devalues the learning experience about nursing theory and development of the profession.Leddy & Pepper's Conceptual Bases of Professional Nursing (Conceptual Basis of Professional Nursing (Leddy)) OverviewNow in its Seventh Edition, this broad-based text addresses the philosophical, developmental, theoretical, accountability, care delivery, and leadership issues encountered by professional nurses throughout a lifetime career. The book outlines the multidimensional roles that encompass professional nursing practice. This edition includes key updated information regarding the influence of nurses in public policy formation, changes in health care delivery, multicultural issues in professional practice, and nursing practice implications of new advances in technology, management, and nursing research.
Clinical vignettes based on real-life scenarios illustrate key concepts in each chapter while offering an opportunity to prepare for future professional challenges. From Theory to Practice questions offer a way to link key chapter points to daily practice. To stimulate critical thinking and classroom discussion, Questions for Reflection are interspersed throughout each chapter. Research Briefs appear in chapters when applicable to promote the use of research in clinical practice. Updated Internet exercises provide current online resources to expand knowledge related to each chapter.

Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in the Louisiana Swamp ReviewIt's hard to go wrong with this subject matter, and I would recommend this book wholeheartedly.
But that said, I was a little disappointed in the book, not for what was in it, but for how much more she could have told us. The author has had a rare experience -- who else do you know who has lived on a houseboat in a swamp, without electricity or most modern conveniences, for a decade? Yet I was left feeling that she only related the bare minimum about her years in the swamp. Part of the problem is that the first half of the book appears to contain only her previously-published articles about her life at that time from a small regional magazine, and they are short and lacking a lot of detail. I'm left thinking how much better this book could have been if she had gone back and fleshed those out, adding more information and context. She doesn't discuss how it felt to adjust to such a rustic life, her relationship with the man she shared this life with, or any problems that they encountered, other than their dislike of returning to civilization for supplies every so often. In other words, she doesn't inject much of herself into her descriptions -- her feelings, her hopes or fears.
The second part of the book talks about temporarily working as a cook on a river boat, meeting the man she would later leave Calvin for, and her life since she left the swamp. In many ways, this is the more descriptive part of the book, especially as she details honestly the boredom of riverboat life and the pain of falling in love with another man. I was left imagining what could have been if she had applied the same descriptive style and writing technique to the earlier part of her work.
Again, I am glad I bought this book, but if the author had spent the time beefing up her earlier articles in the first part of the book, when the subject material is far more unusual, I would have given this book a higher rating. There aren't many people who have lived a life like hers, and it's a shame that it isn't more thoroughly described during her swamp years.
Atchafalaya Houseboat: My Years in the Louisiana Swamp OverviewIn the early 1970s, two idealistic young people—Gwen Carpenter Roland and Calvin Voisin—decided to leave civilization and re-create the vanished simple life of their great-grandparents in the heart of Louisiana's million-acre Atchafalaya River Basin Swamp. Armed with a box of crayons and a book called How to Build Your Home in the Woods, they drew up plans to recycle a slave-built structure into a houseboat. Without power tools or building experience they constructed a floating dwelling complete with a brick fireplace. Towed deep into the sleepy waters of Bloody Bayou, it was their home for eight years. This is the tale of the not-so-simple life they made together—days spent fishing, trading, making wine, growing food, and growing up—told by Gwen with grace, economy, and eloquence. Not long after they took up swamp living, Gwen and Calvin met a young photographer named C. C. Lockwood, who shared their "back to the earth" values. His photographs of the couple going about their daily routine were published in National Geographic magazine, bringing them unexpected fame. More than a quarter of a century later, after Gwen and Calvin had long since parted, one of Lockwood's photos of them appeared in a National Geographic collector's edition entitled 100 Best Pictures Unpublished—and kindled the interest of a new generation. That photo and many others by Lockwood are included here. With quiet wisdom, Gwen recounts her eight-year voyage of discovery—about swamp life, wildlife, and herself. A keen observer of both the natural world and the ways of human beings, she transports readers to an unfamiliar and exotic place, preserving her great adventure for those who did not make the trip in person."I [would write] in the stern of our red and green bateau while Calvin was running nets or lines from the bow. Since ink smears when it gets wet, I used pencils on a yellow legal pad propped against the black Mercury outboard motor. Whenever it was time for me to crank the motor and run us to the next line or net, I'd sit on the pad to keep it from blowing away. . . .During the writing process, we carried on our regular conversations. The stories are almost extensions of those conversations, rising and falling with our voices, capturing the essence of our daily lives like our elderberry wine captured the fragrance of April to be released again in October."—from the prologueAUTHOR BIO: Gwen Roland is a writer and editor for the Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program at the University of Georgia in Griffin. She is at work on a novel set one hundred years ago in the Atchafalaya Basin.

Great Jobs for Psychology Majors Review
DeGalen and Lambert have produced a book that I will recommend to undergraduates, but there are problems. On p. xvii they mention that "a high proportion of members of APA do have doctorates..." Well, all do. There are some associate membership categories. D & L also say that APA members do "not necessarily [have] medical degrees." Well, few do. This sloppy phrasing raises questions about the authors' accuracy. My second general comment is that they do overlook the place of applied research for psychology majors--either at the bachelor or more frequently at the master's level.
But I will recommend it because our students do need help in thinking about careersGreat Jobs for Psychology Majors Overview
