5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations: U.S. History (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) ReviewI didn't like this book at all. The typos kept throwing my mind off--they needed a proofreader DREADFULLY.
The whole book was set up in a very disorganized, unhelpful, skipping-over-things way that threw my mind. It was like reading someone's lecture notes--useful in its way, but not comprehensive.
And the writing was very 8th grade. Repetitive sentence structure, un-professional-sounding, and that distracted me too.5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations: U.S. History (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) Overview
An exciting new series of study guides that lets each student design a course of study pitched to his or her individual needs and learning style

Each year, more than one million U.S. high school students take one or more advanced placement (AP) exams, and, according to official projections, that number will continue to rise in the years ahead. That is because AP exams confer important benefits on those who do well on them. High AP scores are indispensable to gaining admission to most elite colleges. They provide students with a competitive edge when competing for grants and scholarships. And they allow students to bypass required university survey courses, saving on skyrocketing tuition fees.

Designed to coincide perfectly with the most current AP exams, Five Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations guides contain several advanced features that set them above all competitors. Each guide is structured around an ingenious Five-Step Plan. The first step is to develop a study plan, the second builds knowledge, the third and fourth hone test-taking skills and strategies, and the fifth fosters the confidence students need to ace the tests. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students. For the more structured student there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the new year. For students who leave studying to the last minute "Basic Training" covers the basics in just four weeks.

Other outstanding features include:

Sample tests that closely simulate real exams
Review material based on the contents of the most recent tests
Icons highlighting important facts, vocabulary, and frequently-asked questions
Boxed quotes offering advice from students who have aced the exams and from AP teachers and college professors
Websites and links to valuable online test resources, along with author e-mail addresses for students with follow-up questions
Authors who are either AP course instructors or exam developers

Mosby's Pharmacy Technician: Principles and Practice ReviewThis is one of the better books available to give you a good general feel for all the different aspects of the pharmacy technician's job responsibilities. There are a lot of color pictures and examples which are lacking in many other books. The book gives a general description of the different positions a pharmacy technician may hold such as duties in a hospital setting or in a retail setting, special duties such as preparing chemotherapy drugs, IV drugs and compounding, and also includes chapters on the different body systems and drugs that treat diseases in each system. A CD comes with the book that has animations of the body systems and problems to work on to help prepare for the certification exam. The appendix includes a list of 200 of the more popular drugs and a math review. There is also a practice exam at the end. This is a good all inclusive book if you only want to buy one book that covers a little of everything instead of buying all the books in a series. I work as a technician in a pharmacy and I would recommend this book.Mosby's Pharmacy Technician: Principles and Practice OverviewClearly written and filled with practical information, this book offers a comprehensive introduction to the knowledge and skills pharmacy technicians need for successful practice. Key areas of concentration include the role of the pharmacy technician in the pharmacy setting, an overview of medications used to treat specific body systems, a breakdown of the different classifications of drugs, and a review of the basic sciences at the core of pharmacy practice. It also offers helpful PTCB examination review, as well as information on career opportunities for pharmacy technicians with advice on getting a job and advancing in the profession.
A full-color layout and hundreds of illustrations highlight important information and bring key concepts to life.
Learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter help focus study time.
Key terms with definitions introduce the vocabulary used in the pharmacy setting.
Drug names with pronunciations demonstrate how to say and spell medication names correctly, an essential part of the pharmacy technician's job.
Tech Notes offer helpful tips, hints, cautions, and safety information.
A brief overview of anatomy and physiology offers a better understanding of how drugs work in the body.
Mosby's Essential Drugs for Pharmacy Technicians, powered by Gold Standard. This new, online resource will include detailed drug monographs for the top 200 drugs dispensed in the United States.
Pharmacist's Perspective boxes offer insights to the pharmacist's point of view for various on-the-job situations.
Do You Remember These Key Points? boxes summarize key concepts in each chapter.
The Technician's Corner features learning exercises that relate new information to realistic clinical situations.
A comprehensive glossary in both English and Spanish includes all key terms and definitions from the book.

A new chapter on PTCB exam review offers a 125-question multiple-choice practice exam that mirrors the content and format of the actual exam.
Tech Alert! boxes provide critical reminders for avoiding common pharmacy errors.
Nearly 100 new pill images in this edition assist in identifying drugs on sight and reducing the risk of pharmacy errors.
Additional math exercises on the Companion CD and the Evolve website offer more opportunities to strengthen math skills.
This edition has been completely updated to include the latest drugs, regulations, HIPAA information, and more to ensure safe, effective practice.
Updated Companion CD bound in every text includes animations, additional math exercises, and English/Spanish audio glossary, chapter quizzes, and more.

5 Steps to a 5 AP U.S. History, Second Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) ReviewLike any other ap us history student I was faced with the task of taking the AP USH exam. However the harder task was choosing which book to use to study for it.
I looked at all the big names: Kaplan, Barrons, PR. And then I saw this. The book helped me get a 4 along with Barron flashcards i bought (buy those too!).
Goods: gives a good summary and 2 practice tests and dbq's and a diagnostic
Cons: eh, wait for an updated version of the book. didn't really go 'really' in depth as i would've liked. I had a really REALLY good teacher, so the book didn't help a decent amount by itself. there are only 5 questions at the end of each chapter, which test easy questions.
Final note: If they update this book, buy it. IF they don't look at other reviews for (09) USH books on amazon.5 Steps to a 5 AP U.S. History, Second Edition (5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations Series) Overview
This revised edition of 5 Steps to a 5: AP U.S. History is fully updated with chapters on George W. Bush's first term and the 2004 election. It also includes new sections on the Clinton era, international relations, and U.S. foreign policy.Use this ultimate resource for scoring big on the AP* exam and earning valuable college credits.

CliffsTestPrep Foreign Service Officer Exam: Preparation for the Written Exam and the Oral Assessment ReviewI just received my copy of this book and I have to say I was expecting a whole lot more. It offers a pretty skimpy selection of sample questions and answers from the various subject covered by the FSO exam. Over 60 pages of this 300 page book are dedicated to grammar. This is obviously important but I have better books covering this area already. Also I can find those rules on the internet for free. I was really expecting a book that was filled with sample questions and answers. This did not have that. It does not even offer suggestions for books for further study. You think they would have at least plugged their own books, which are generally good.
I would recommend people getting a dummies guide, Idiots guide, or Cliff's guide on the covered subjects. According to this guide these would include; American History, World History and Geography, Economics, United States Society, Mathematics and Statistics, Management, Communication, and Computers.
The test is basically multiple choice and tests a person's knowledge of trivia versus in-depth knowledge of any of the subject areas.
One other thing to the Cliffs people: New Kids on the Block are in no possible way ever considered to have been a Rhythm and Blues band as you state in question 12 on page 30 of this guide. They were a bunch of pretty boys that appealed to pre-pubescent girls.
There are a few typos and factual inaccuracies in this as the other reviewer has pointed out. Since you can not really use this as a compendium of questions from prior tests it really isn't a major downfall. All in all this book is a bust get it only if you have some extra cash sitting around but don't expect it to be useful for serious study.

The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the ASVAB ReviewThe math and English sections are well-written, but since this is one of those miniature paperback-sized books designed to fit in your shirt pocket, it certainly doesn't have a whole bunch of exercises, which is pretty much the only way you're going to get this stuff in your blood. You have explanations of stuff, but as for exercises, there are only a few scattered here and there.
The big drawback in this edition is the section on physics and mechanics, which, as it is only about 20 pages long, isn't going to be very helpful on this section. You're simply have to get a more serious text if you plan on scoring high on this test without further preparation in mechanics.
My advice would be to buy Kaplan ASVAB 2010 Edition: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery and go through it seriously at home for your major work. Then, when you've got a slow moment at work, you can pull this tiny one out and review a concept here and there. The Pocket Idiot's Guide to the ASVAB OverviewYou know you cannot 'fail" the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), but if you're planning a career in the military, you'll want to prepare before taking these mandatory exams. The Pocket Idiot's Guide' to the ASVAB will show you the lay of the land and help you plot a strategy, with explanations for every component of the text (with practice questions for each). You'll also receive expert guidance on how each branch of the military uses the scores to determine your future service.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Kaplan Human Resource Certification: Proven, Practical Tools to Help You Pass the PHR and SPHR Exams (Kaplan Human Resource Certification: Preparing for the Phr &) ReviewTo put this in context, I purchased this book in order to prep for the SPHR test, which I first took and passed in 2000 (dumb move on my part to let it lapse). In 2000, I basically got an "intro to HR" college textbook, which turned out to be sufficient. I could not get my hands on a textbook this time, so I ordered this book.
Sorry to say, this book was a rather poor choice. Scads of important subjects are missing or poorly treated. To give just a few examples, COBRA is never mentioned, nor many union-mgmt strike terms, nor are compensation terms such as red circling and so on--all of which were featured on the test, of course. Also, there are numerous typos and apparent omissions, indicative of a sloppy effort. In many cases, the sample test questions refer to concepts never covered in the book. The sample tests are plentiful (four 225-question tests), but I am quite sure the questions were not validated. I often thought the "correct" answers were dubious (but then again, you will think that on the actual test as well.) The tests were helpful in identifying subjects I needed to research elsewhere, since the subjects were missing from the book. My extra research was what saved me.
For you test-takers out there, I will add that I found this year's SPHR much more challenging than in 2000. Most questions required different layers of analysis. In only about 10% of the questions was I sure I had the right answer--and keep in mind, I passed the sucker (don't have my score yet). Fortunately, I test well--and I only studied for 3 days. The HRCI assessment tests were a big help to me (they should be, for $70--and ten of the 75 questions on the second test were REPEATS!--thanks, HRCI). As you take it, write down the subjects to further study.
Taking the test soon? Best of luck, and get a better book to study.Kaplan Human Resource Certification: Proven, Practical Tools to Help You Pass the PHR and SPHR Exams (Kaplan Human Resource Certification: Preparing for the Phr &) OverviewKaplan Human Resource Certification is a comprehensive resource for HR professionals seeking career enhancement and advancement. Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism ReviewAs a parent of a teenager with Aspergers, alot of Ms. Gradin's recommendations confirmed what I already thought: sell the skills not the personality, go into areas where your interests/fixations lie and consider working as a consultant in your area of expertise. Finding recommendations I already thought of didn't make me feel like those parts of the book were a waste. On the contrary, it is nice to have affirmation from an outside source, particularly one intimately knowledgable of autism.
Other recommendations she makes were new to me. I had not thought of them, but they make alot of sense. She encourages people to go out and interview people in their field of choice to learn what they can about the industry. For neurotypical people, this would be akin to networking. For autistics, it is couched in a manner far easier for them to manage. People on the autism spectrum are probably not going to be good at social networking. But they would be very good at the interviews she recommends. She takes classic job networking and reworks it into research. I know my son LOVES researching more information on his interests, but digs in his heels at the thought of socializing.
Ms. Gradin also discusses the different styles of learning/thinking and which jobs are good for those type of people. My son happens to have amazing visual spatial abilities and is currently taking CAD in high school where he is getting straight A's. He now wants to become an architect which is exactly one of the fields Ms. Gradin reommends for visual spatial people on the spectrum.
Other beneficial feature of the book are the list of sources for information, examples of people in a wide selection of fields and Temple Gradin's personal observances.
I'm greatful to Ms. Gradin for writing books on autism. As hard as I try to understand my son, the fact that my brain is wired differently then his means I will always approach him with a bias, unintentional or otherwise. Her books clarify and explain things I could ponder for years and still not quite grasp.
I would also highly recommend her Animals In Translation book.Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism OverviewThis career planning guide is written specifically for high-functioning adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum, their families, teachers, and counselors. The two authors weave together a unique blend of information and advice based on personal experiences. Temple Grandin draws from her own experience with autism spectrum disorders and her professional career, and Kate Duffy uses her expertise on employment issues and the mother of two teenagers with autistic-like behaviors. The result is an extremely useful and practical book that introduces step-by-step processes for the job search with a major section on the impact ASD has in the workplace, including managing sensory problems, how to nurture and turn talents and special interests into paid work, jobs that are particularly suited to individuals on the spectrum, and much more. First-hand accounts of job experiences and advice from individuals representing a broad range of careers particularly suited for high-functioning individuals on the autism spectrum round off this exciting new resource.
